Christchurch - looking for info on hotels

Im going to Christchurch for the month of August, i may be on my own due to some circumstances that have arisen.
I dont fancy the thoughts of staying in a hostel on my own for a month, ive never been out of Ireland before apart from 1 trip to wales and am new to all this travelling stuff.

So, what i`d be hoping for would be to stay in a hotel somewhere in the middle of Christchurch city so that i could explore around in my own time and have a relatively safe/comfortable place to stay at night. i dont need 5star top of the range hotels, 3star im sure would be adequate.

Im having trouble finding hotels let along hotel prices on the internet, for some reason. Some of the hotel websites seem hard to navigate and not all displaying prices?

Can someone help me here, by either reccommending a medium priced hotel that maybe they satyed in in Christchurch and give me a rough idea of prices or by finding 1 on the internet. (Im not anyway handy at looking up such stuff) Can you book/get a hotel by the week or only on a night by night basis? Appreciate any help here people as im really confused!

We stayed in a fabulous hostel in Christchurch called The Old Countryhouse. It was far from a grotty hostel, it was warm and clean, with really nice B&B style rooms. The kitchen was spacious and well equiped too ....

I know you mentioned you're travelling on your own? Well a hostel like this is the perfect place to meet people .. its about a mile from the city centre btw.

Try Warner's hotel, it is slap bang in the middle of the city and is not too steep .. I think we paid about €150 for a junior suite for the two of us. If you have any interest this is where Scott and Shackelton used to stay before departing on their South Pole missions !

If you are willing to spend a bit more the Classic Villa is a must. again very central and is like a very fancy B&B with a great homely feel to it. The kitchen is open to all guests 24 hours a day and is is fully stocked with everything and it's a case of help yourself .. breakfast is a joy to behold with the owner whipping up what ever might take your fancy from pizza to full fry ups!!

Thanks lads, that Hostel that you "Glowing" linked to is very nice, and I see they do discounts and offers if staying long. That could suit me down to the ground, i might spend 2weeks in the 1 place, and the last 2 weeks in another place, $60 per night seems to be the norm too.

Ill check out that Warner`s hotel now "Whippet", thanks.
