Batteries: Camera brand or Any brand?

    Hi there,

I'm currently trawling the millions of websites trying to buy a 400d + spare battery + CF card + filter for my dad .... (exhausting!)

My question is regarding the battery - the Canon batteries seem to be about twice the price of a canon-compatible battery. Do you think its worth the extra to buy a canon branded one or will any battery do?

My boyfriends opinion is that your warrantee may be voided if you put another company's battery in the cam and it explodes or something ....

    Thanks for your advice!

I use the hanhel batteries and a Canon ones and the Canon one only lasts a little bit longer. Get him a 50mm f1.8 lens aswell and he will be very happy! :)

Hahnel batteries are probably the best photographic product produced in ireland.

I've been using Hahnel batteries in my D50 & D200 for a year now. Absolutely no problems with them. They even outlast the Nikon equivalent.

    I've 2 Canon and 5 No-Name. No difference.

Cheap on 7dayshop, about a tenner.

I got a spare no-name one on 7dayshop and it was DOA - looked fine in the charger, the light went orange then green after a couple hours, I put it in the camera and... nothing. :(

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I might save myself 50 quid!

I ordered the kit last night from Pixmania - got the 400d & kit lens (I know I know, the my parents have to start somewhere), a 2G x66 CF card and USB2.0 card reader all for 777 incl delivery.

    Not too bad eh?

If you look carefully at a lot of ads for Nikon batteries on eBay, you'll see they're not actually genuine. they sound like they are but read it in its entirety a couple of times before you do go for one. I'm usually very reluctant to use no-name batteries and accessories, but I've found that the Haehnel batteries are great, have had 3 so far and apart from once or twice not starting to charge, once they do start there's no telling the difference between them and the Nikons.

    Hi,

The Olympus BLS-1 battery (for the E-410) costs €55 from komplett.ie, where I'm buying an E-410 2 lens kit.

A Hahnel HL-S1 replacement for the Olympus E-410 BLS-1 battery is around €42 incl shipping from fotosense.co.uk.

An INOV8 replacement is around €25 incl shipping from picstop.co.uk.

With batteries, is it a case of "you get what you pay for", or is the €25 battery going to perform & last as well as the €55 battery?

    Thanks,

    Mark

I bought a replacement battery for my Canon 300D a few days ago from the ebay power seller above. He does replacements for 400D too.
The feedback for the batteries seems really good.
I paid about €6 for mine.

I've been using the cheap 7Dayshop betteries for years in the 10D, 5D and 40D and they last longer than the Canon own brand ones. They are still working away, no problems. I got some off eBay too for around €6 and they wre fine too.
