    Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a Permabag for storing a car - has anyone here got one? Just wondering if they're worth the money (450 euro approx...)

    Thanks

i have a "carcoon" about a year. works well and quick and easy to setup...

put the car in clean and it will come out clean :)

only issue is if you want to go for a quick run, it takes about 10-15mins to unzip and extract

you sure about the 450 price?

is the permabag the one with the canisters? the carcoon has fans etc I think.

I think I priced a carcoon for my car at 700+

Yeah - the Permabag uses the cannisters that you dry out in the oven every few months. I looked at the Carcoon but its expensive, takes up a bit more space than I'd like and it needs a power supply. Carcoon is used by Formula One teams etc so its got a good pedigree. Permabag is cheaper and might be enough for what I need - its supposed to keep humidity down to 50%. Currently my garage is reading 70 - 80% humidity and I suspect that it gets a lot worse on damp, still winter nights.

The Permabag I'm looking at is €448 (car up to 187" long) so its a mid range option. If I decide to bag my GT6 then I can get a smaller bag for €360. I'd prefer not to have to spend the money but its cheaper than buying new chrome etc down the road.

Ok, I got both a Carcoon and a Permabag...

The carcoon is susceptible to high winds so really needs to be in a sheltered location - I've a few scratches on the bonnet where the fans have hit the car when very windy.
Pros: non-contact with bodywork (most of the time), can stick in a wet car with hot engine and it'll dry itself out, come with battery charger/monitor.
Cons: Looks stupid, expensive, needs electricity to drive fans, can be troublesome to fit if its windy, local kids thinking its a bouncy castle.

I got the Permabag mainly for cost reasons (a GTV6 sized carcoon was 25% of what I paid for the bloody car). It a 3 part solution, a soft cover on the car, then the waterproof permabag and the exterior storm proof covering. Inside the bag are reusable silica packs which absorb any moisture.

Pros: Cheaper, doesn't need any power, loads of strapping included so no flapping about in strong winds, looks like a regular car cover when fitted.
Cons: Takes a while to fit the whole lot. In contact with the car body so shouldn't be used to store a wet car, exhaust needs to be cool.

Overall I'd prefer the Carcoon, its more convenient for taking a car for a quick blast, or if your caught out in the rain so worries. The permabag is really more suited to longer term storage and definitely not for a daily driver.

I don't know anything about Permabags, but I can recommend Carcoons. I'll echo the previous comments, it takes a few mins to get your car out, so its best to leave it in the carcoon for extended periods, rather then everyday use.
