Laptop won't display one particular site properly

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help.

I've always used Bebo on my laptop. For the last few weeks it won't display properly all of a sudden. Hooray! some of you may cry but personally I like it so it is a pain in the ass.

Basically the pages are all plain white, no picturs or skins displayed. Flashbox videos will actually play but everything else is completely stripped down. This is the ONLY site this happens to on my computer. I'm using internet explorer on a Dell D505.

I've mailed bebo but no response as of yet.

    Anyone any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Conor

MOD: I'm not a regular poster on this area of boards. I had a look through the list and this seemed the most appropriate board. If I'm wrong please move.

Same thing happens on my brothers lap top. Every other site loads fine.

What browser are you using? IE, Firefox, Opera?

    what ISP are you using?

My sister had the same problem, and it seemed to be a DNS issue.

    Thanks for the responses,

    I'm using Internet Explorer.

If ISP means Internet Service Provider that would be Eircom.

Although I'm not entirely sure what you mean by DNS (Domain Name or something is it?) and you might mean something else by ISP...

Anyway, to add insult to injury, Bebo sent me back a generic reply saying something along the lines of "we are aware of your query/complaint/issue and are working on a solution/response/tea-break which will no doubt provide you with another unsatisfactory automated e mail reply"

    twats

so any help from you guys here would be extra-appreciated

    Conor

Open a Command Prompt reply with what you get after entering:
    1. ping www.bebo.com
    2. tracert www.bebo.com
This can be used to rule out other causes of the problem. Your network administrator has hardly added the website to a blacklist on the router, effectively blocking it for everyone on your LAN?

Erm... how does one bring up a command prompt box again...?

As regards your network administrator point, the laptop was bought through UCD, it's a standard issue Quinn School Dell. There are some LAN settings to do with UCD in my internet options but the boxes are all unchecked.

I finished college a year ago. My understanding was, once I was at home using my own network connection, UCD would have nothing to do with it?

    Sorry, got it open there.

    Neither command promts are recognised...

Yes, if using your own connection then it has nothing to do with UCD. Just as well seeing as it's blocked in most universities now.

Regarding the commands, I bulleted them so there's no number preceding them. Perhaps I should have stated that earlier. Just run [without the sing quotation marks] 'ping www.bebo.com', 'tracert www.bebo.com' and 'nslookup www.bebo.com'.

Try this for me: in the address bar, enter http://207.7.149.50 instead. Also, just for the sake of it, empty your browser's cache and cookies.

    I appreciate your patience! :D

Cleared files, history etc. That numerical URL gives the same result.

However, when i did the nslookup it says: Non-Authoritative answer
    Name: www.bebo.com.ucd.ie

    The server is xbox.dedi.inhoster.com

Is there something in the one marked " proxy " ? it'd have space for an address .

Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings

has a proxy box with a UCD proxy in it but all the check boxes here are unchecked and greyed out. I can check the box and delete the proxy box but it makes no difference to Bebo and when I go back in the proxy address is there again. That said, the box is unchecked and I'm not anywhere near UCD so does any of that matter?

Internet Options -> Connections -> Settings

is what i assume should matter and there is no proxy in that box

It shouldn't matter if you're not using UCD's Internet connection. I blame the proxy.

I know someone that used wifi at another university in this country. They insisted on installing print client, another AV program and using a proxy.

Have a look at the programs installed on your laptop for such software UCD may have installed and remove it if you won't be using it again. Try downloading Firefox or Opera and visiting the site.

Everyone seems to be getting very technical here. Howabout you try the simplest solution and try a different browser like Firefox, Opera, or Safari. Though I wouldn't recommend Safari for windows yet.

Bebo have made design updates to there pages in recent weeks so it could be that your browser does not support them. What version of IE are you using. Selecting "About" from the Help window will display this.

    Edit..

Sorry missed your post before replying.

its a group policy that UCD enforce on student laptops, set via domain group policy i would say.

Basically, bebo is being proxied through a UCD server and looks like they're removing images in order to reduce bandwith. I actually vaguely remember ucd completly blocking bebo altogether. But i can't remember.

I think also they apply policies to firefox but sure give it a try anyway.

All else failing try the opera browser.

Setup your own proxy, and then you will have no hassle. There are a few good links if you spend some time on google.

I have the same problem. From what I've noticed, its not connecting to bebo.com that's the problem but connecting to its subdomains ie) s.bebo.com

I have tried using firefox 2, ie 6 and safari with no solution.

However, using my PSPs browser, on the same network, I was able to access the site with no problems.

    I'm truly stumped lol

I'm having the same probs with my pc. Any solutions?

I've found that using a web proxy for when I want to use bebo works.
That's the only solution I can think of :s
I emiled bebo but all they said was that they are aware of the problem and they are working on it blah blah blah lol
