Help needed, I have a Canon 350d with 17-85 ef-s is usm lens and I can't seem to be able to capture a moving subject indoors without the flash.

I get alot of blur. I have tried various modes without success. My little girl is a great Irish dancer but I've no pictures.

    Would anyone have any suggestions.

If you want a fully-auto setup, the sport mode should be enough. What apeture is your lens?

I've tried shooting in sport mode but still no good. The apeture is 4-5.6.

The kit lens that come with the camera worked great in sport mode (horse racing photos) but I expected a better performance from my new lens.

Turn your Dial to P ,then press the iso button and set it to 1600.

Your lens is too slow to be honest unless you bump up your iso to 1600 or so you have a chance of getting some decent shots but your shots will be full off noise. The best option would be to buy the canon 50mm 1.8 for indoor use and its also a nice portrait lens when put on the 350d, alot of people use this lens because its cheap and its very sharp.

If I remember correctly, the sports mode on a 350 will limit your ISO to a maximum of 400.

Put your camera onto AV mode, move the aperture to the lowest number, and put the iso to 800 or 1600.

If you're still having problems, you might want to try underexposing by 1/3 or 2/3s...

Noise on the 350D is not great from ISO 800 up. Would not really recommend. You really need a faster lens to be honest. Second the 50mm 1.8 for this.

No harm in finding out what iso will give you :) .
It can really help with the camera learning process ,I wasn't too happy with the outcome to be honest.
But at least you'll get something for the shots;)
