Is there a range within 1-2 hrs driving of kildare where i could take my .17hmr, as a non-member, just to group it and see what ammo it likes??

Yeah but midlands wont allow ya to fire the 17 if your a non-member.
They only allow .22 shooting for non-members.

With my .17HMR it likes the Hornady 17g V-max.
Same goes for the 20g Hollow points.

The Remington stuff I think is crap. I kept getting
split necks with this ammo and flyers.

Got some CCI TNT 17g which I have yet to try out.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ring the range and ask .

.17Hmr is still a rimfire round and a smaller calibre than .22Lr.
Noise is the main problem with these usually.

BTW .. I think CCI actually loads all of the .17 HMR ammunition for the CCI, Federal, Hornady, and Remington brands. The bullet heads differ slightly.

At least according to Chuck Hawks..
    http://www.chuckhawks.com/17HMR.htm

"announcements by CCI, Federal and Remington that they were commencing distribution of .17 HMR ammunition under their brand names. CCI will continue to manufacture the .17 HMR ammo for all four brands, but the load specifications vary."

I know CCI load all the ammo across the different brands,
I am not sure about if there is a different types of powder used
in each of the brands though. Read someplace (cant remember where)
that the Hornady powder was different in someway like a mixture of two
    different types blended together.

The Brass must be different with the different brands considering the
remington brand results in split necks in mine and the hornady does not

Pity they prime the ammo before they neck the brass down hence they cant anneal the necks! Would feel much happer if the necks were not brittle!

Would like to get some of those Federal ones with the black tips
just out of the way they look.

How much does it cost to use midlands as a non member?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,612 ✭✭✭bullets

Less than a tenner (7-8 Euro) for the day to hire a .22 rifle,
    4.50 per box of 50ammo
3-4 Euro for a target with 6 target faces.
you get a Euro back if you hand back the used target face.
(effort to stop poeple from walking away without tidying up after themselves)

Best bet is to bring a Permanent marker with you and make crosses or
mark in extra black dots for you to aim at inbetween the target faces
so you dont waste all your cash buying more targets every time.

And anyone can just show up and rent a rifle?
    Sounds like good value.
Also, what about getting a few lessons is that possible?

    Thanks

    Yes, but only a .22lr

Just ask at desk for coaching and someone will be happy to coach you

It's generally a very frienly place.

I've been a member for about 4 years now.........great amenity

Would i have to be a member to use a .223?
I live in Co. Wicklow and the midlands range seems to be the closest that caters for centerfire rifles.

Best solution is to ring and ask the range directly rather than asking here .
If you haven't been there already, maybe you should make a trip down and have a look about.
It's a friendly place and visitors are always welcomed.

People there will only be too happy to show you the facility's of which they are justifiably proud.

I'm sure people from other clubs around the country would say the same thing.

Jaycee is right, give 'em a ring and arrange a visit.....you could see for yourself then
