A high point between director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert De Niro this has to be not just the greatest film about boxing but one of the best films ever made. De Niro plays the boxer La Motta in this true-life account of his rise and fall. Shot in stunning black and white, with fantastic use of music and with a powerhouse performance from De Niro this is pure cinema from beginning to end. De Niro rightly won the best actor Oscar for his performance in 1981, though Scorsese unjustly lost best director to Robert Redford. De Niro's performance is legendary, to portray La Motta in his later years he called a holt to filming for three months and proceeded to gain a huge amount of weight. When filming restarted he was hugely overweight and out of shape, just right to play the older La Motta. A perfect film in every way.
