Gearbox rebuild anyone?

    Hi Folks,

Can anyone recommend a gearbox rebuilder who could repair or exchange the box on my '86 VW Type 25 Wasserboxer with the 2.1 5-speed dog-leg box? To be perfectly accurate it's now a 4-speed box since first gear gave up the ghost.

    Any advice appreciated,

    Thanks in advance,

    N

Probably best ask around on all the VW t25 specialist fora

    Thanks Peasant,

I've tried that, but so far I'm coming up dry. Several options in the Yuk or dozens in Deutschland, but I was hoping for something closer to home, even if the cost difference is more than the ferry!

Our gearbox is playing up right now as well... I *think* we have a 'dog-leg' gear box (first gear is down).... I won't drive it atm as I'm not confident drivint it with a dodgy gearbox.... Any of the vw specialists seem to be full up for months. OH will probably end up replacing it himself.
Maybe try eircooled.com, they're normally helpful enough on that forum... and could point you in the right direction.

Are you both sure that it is the actual gearbox that's wrong?

The gear likages on these vans are notorious for becoming misaligned and not working properly.

I'm not sure about anything :)
OH put that gearbox in himself, so it probably is something like that...

Worth checking, but in my personal experience with these <insert-your-own-expletive> gear linkages, if they are even ever so slightly out, you'll lose all the gears and not just one

Fits are your symptoms the same or different to nmacc's symptoms?

No they're slightly different. Its just difficult to find gear (I can't find third in it at all but OH can) so it would make sense to me that its the linkages.
OH reckons he knows whats wrong anyway.
Oh, we lose a lot of gearbox oil too..

Did your OH remember to put the needle bearing in when he put the gearbox back in?
Only needed in the T25 as far as I'm aware, so easy not to know about it if that makes sense.
Have a look in your flywheel (little plastic inspection cap) is it dry in there or wet...should be dry

    I'll mention it to him.
