Aldi vs Lidl

Remind me of the differences, please.

I've gathered that Lidl has good, high-class stuff - nice wine, ham, cheese, vegetables, etc - whereas Aldi is more gutty. (Alas, it's an Aldi that's going to move in up the road from us.)

But which is the one that pays its staff well and has good conditions?

Neither. Relatively speaking, Aldi take care of their staff better than Lidl.

OK, that makes me feel a bit better about Aldi moving in. Thanks, Karoma.

Lidl uses plasticy, fake looking models on its leaflets......enough to put me off :D .

I personally prefer Aldi, seems more professional to me.

I would say that aldi has a better range of food. Usually better specials too. Their luxury ice cream is lovely.

    Aldi is by far superior.

This thread is pointless though. Tesco is obviously the God of all supermarkets if not all beings.

That must mean that SuperValu is the devil incarnate, always objecting to Tesco trying to build a store in the same town.

They for a few months after the open while they are still properly staffed and the shelves are actually stocked. The quality of my local Tesco stores just keep dropping and dropping.

I am particularly aware of it as I worked in a Tesco for 5 years while in school and college my ould fella was a manager for 20+ years.

A few of my friends swear by Lidl and I have went shopping there about 4 times to come out empty handed and then head for Tesco or Superquinn. Nothing in it appeals to me at all.

Getting completely off-topic for a mo...I was a manager with them years ago.

I work in Lidl and in fairness, Lidl and Aldi pay better than any other supermarket, and they're finally bringing in new rules to give us proper breaks. Its not amazing conditions but its as good or better than any of the competitors. Although you have to work, not sit around all day looking for something to do like other supermarkets with too many staff (or at least that was my experience working in Dunnes). If your good, promotions are faster and easier to attain than most other places.
The store managers are mostly sound compared to the power-trippin', egotistical ****s in Dunnes - once ya get on with your work they're grand, although a prequisite for the higher-up managers who visit now and again is that you can't smile. In my experience.

Lidl uses plasticy, fake looking models on its leaflets......enough to put me off
Haha, my friend got his first proper job modelling job for that lidl retail degree thing and got some slaggin' - I'll have to send him the way of this thread.:D He won't be happy. Or maybe he'll agree I don't know.

I'm surprised people are saying Aldi over Lidl...in my experience they're the same and about 90% of the products are identical and from same manufactures and suppliers - just different packaging and brand names.

Speaking of brand names, the brand name for bread in Lidl is now 'Riding Lodge' - its like a whorehouse or something. Who's idea was it to use that as a brand name for bread? Maybe at least one person has a sense of humour in head office.

    Aldi for the cheap booze...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

They are pretty much the same.. i heard they are both owned by brothers who went their seperate ways and try to outdo each other.. so when a lidl opens, an aldi will open very close :D

Anyway Aldi has a better quality about it.. especially the Wine and alcohol. Most of the products are the same type of thing though.. cheap stuff.

Tesco is better, though i much prefer the quality in Dunnes (as cheap as tesco) and more so Superquinn obviously.

Ahahahaha a fool and his money will soon be parted. Cheaper food = more money for other things.

Definitely Lidl FTW! There's an even cheaper version in Germany called Plus. They don't disclose any accounts and there's no phone number for their head office  http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4156/is_20030831/ai_n12584472

It's actually a little different. Aldi and Lidl are totally seperate, and always have been. There is actually two seperate Aldi's (originally one, but split up one to each brother). Both Aldi's still work closely with each other but are seperate. They've got a bit of a gentlemans agreement going on so you'll never find them competing in the same country, except Germany where you do find both, naturally.

Luckat: I think you have your answer. However, if you want the thread re-opened, let me or another mod know.

Jrembin will take a short timeout (I'd actually let this slide normally as it's obviously tongue-in-cheek. However, you've upset the locals with this one + some of your other posts to AH... mmm. I think it's best you take a little break from posting and see how others interact.) :)
