Airport Problems

I've been having this problem with airport continuously and I wonder if anyone here can shed some light on it.

Basically, when attempting to surf wirelessly in our apartment, we usually get an error message saying the mac cannot connect to the router. Attempting to log into the network manually fails with the same error.

At the same time, my pc laptop never has any problems and neither does the 360.

The ONLY thing that solves this is to go into the router settings and change the router name. Airport then sees the network and asks for a password to connect. I enter the password and save it to the keyring. Airport successfully connects like this EVERY time.

If I then restart the macbook it won't be able to connect saying it experienced an 'error'. If I manually select the network and enter the password it'll still say error.

The only thing that'll solve this is renaming the bloody router AGAIN and doing the above. This is really goddamn annoying. I can't find anyone else with this problem online.

What kind of router is it? What encryption are you using, have you tried changing it? Are you definitely using the right encryption to log on with?

Look in your network prefs, under Airport, what are the ip settings?

    Exactly which settings?

It's so frustrating. I thought I'd sorted it out today. I installed new firmware on the router (Netgear 834G). I renamed the network and voila - it was connecting no problem. Restarted the mac a few times and everything seemed perfect.

Until tonight. Same thing :( Why would it work 2 hours ago then stop working now?

There might be an ip conflict. You said it was working fine and then stopped. Were you using your pc (or xbox) during/around the time this happened?

Let me guess, WEP encryption, this is a problem with keychain memorising the code, another soloution is to turn off airport and turn it back on, I used to have this issue, I changed my encryption to WPA and now it works

Hey professor - everything was on and working in the afternoon. Mac, 360 and PC. All were successfully downloading files.

I turned them all on and off and everything seemed fine. Hence me giving myself a right old pat on the back.

Only for the problem to start again last night.

No stephen, it's set to WPA encryption. Turning airport on and off *sometimes* works. Not every time though.
