SKY HD - Install seems to be a pain in the arse

    Hi All,

Had Finlays out this morning to do a HD install.

They would not go up to my dish (chimney mounted) on grounds that they could not get their ladder onto the roof - despite another satellite installer being able to move my dish about a month ago.

Then he said that they had to bring a second cable down from the dish, drill through the wall and bring wiring across sitting room.

He said they could not use the EXISTING cables - not even the spare one that is wired into the room.

I was excited during the week at getting it but don't fancy the hassle associated with it.

Pain in the arse really isn't it.

    Slumped.

Wow - maybe it was that installer tho? I had no problems at all, I have to say - the second cable is a requisite alright, but didn't cause us any problems. I'm in Swords, if you want, PM me and I'll give you the name of a guy who can do the install for you - no promises, but I found them great.

I was going to get it and really looking forward to it.
    Much the same story really.

Plus i dont have a phone line any more to activate the subscription.

In the end it was such hassle , i just decided to forget about sky HD and get rid of the movies and sports right down to the lowest package. Saving about €500 a year and i dont miss those channels one bit.

    Actually on a semi-related point..

Can anyone recommend a decent independent installer on the northside (Coolock area) that could install a quad LNB (already bought by myself) onto an existing sky dish and run about 20m of cable from it to the 2nd port on a sky+ box.

Any ideas how much would I expect to pay for this?

If it is the correct kind it just clips in.

Cost depends on if on wall, roof, chimeny and how far / hard to run cable. €50 to €500

Did a self install myself using existing cables for Sky HD, moved sky plus upstairs, called sky and hey presto! all done in less than an hour.;)

Now have to relocate sky plus box to daughters room and move the kitchen one into my room, called local installer he said it would be a 2 man job, would take up most of the afternoon, And would cost €180. Is that reasonable??

I'm gonna do it myself but wanted to find out how much it would cost for installer to do.

I don't know how anyone can say its a two man job to relocate a sky box without even looking at your house. I myself usually charge between €40 to €75 euro for a relocation but this can vary depending on the work involved.

Big ladder that needs two people?

Also charge may depend on how far installer has to travel.

On a similar note, a friend of mine in Raheen,Limerick changed from Chorus to Sky two weeks ago.Paid up etc, like you was all excited etc. Installer called and made a right mess of his set up. He said installer was in a hurry from the minute he arrived. Also sold him a Magic eye that was not working within two hours of him leaving. Also screwed up his terrestrial tv which he could previously watch on all tv's.He was really fed up.Had to call Sky and give out etc..and then take a day off the following Wed while another installer called to put right what the previous guy had screwed up .At last he is happy now!
I personally was thinking of getting Sky plus but now I am wary about this due to the hit and miss scenario of getting a good installer or not.I know a good installer but don't have the choice of using him or not?!? Think about it-would you build an extension on your house if you only met the builders when they had the job got and called to your house to start it!!! No chance... Seems to me anyone with a ladder can be come a Sky Installer.!!!

But I assume that means if I have a special offer letter from Sky (€114) + €75 install for sky plus i have to go through them and take my chances.
If I use an independent i assume it would be at full price etc?

    cheers

Not necessarily, ASA'a (independent agents) can use offers from time to time although its true they don't let every offer out to ASA'a. I gave up on them years ago because it took so long to get paid

I am actually moving to Swords soon and would like to get advice on the installation. I will mount a 100cm dish anyhow for FTA channels and I would like know what to add in order to be ready for sky, maybe you can forward me the details of the installer
