Best player on the market right now?

I need to get a new MP3 player. My iRiver h340 got kinda messed up when my car was stolen :(

What is the best player on the market right now? Plug and play is quite important to me...I dont want to mess around with having to use various programmes to add songs etc.

I was thinking of getting the new 80gb ipod and putting rockbox on it...but seeing as though ipods are so flimsy, I'm not so sure.

Any outstanding players out at the moment that I should consider?

    Thanks

Not sure if the 80gb model can be rockboxed, have to double check that though....

So ideally you want high capacity 60/80 gb? Like you need that capacity yeah?

Well it would be nice to have that kind of capacity. But 40 would do probly

Creative Zen Vision M 60Gb model would be my recommendation.

Zune if you don't mind going through ebay (only released in america at the mo).
I got one and it's brilliant, see this thread which i post in near the end of 1st page:

Although if you insist on larger capacity (zune only comes in 30GB) I, too, would recommend the 60GB creative zen vision m.

In regards to rockboxed players does it not void your warranty on a new player?
I had it on a h120 but i have a new x5l now and im not too willing to put it on as i know it voids the cowan warranty.

i can't really say how if affects the battery life tbh, because the second i heard about rockbox on 80gig i went and bought one. haven't used apple's firmware or itunes for that matter, it's great.

well how much battery life do you get per charge with the rockbox firmware?

Creative Zen Vision M 60gig Is without a doubt the best player around right now...

Xvid / divx support! I mean it plays 99% of video on the web

4+ hours of video playback and 13+ hours of audio playback, FM radio, FM recording, Voice recorder...........

I love my Archos 404, got it a few weeks ago and it's brilliant... It plays most videos (not all, but you can buy codec packs off their site, i didn't bother cos it plays everything i have), it looks fab & its drag & drop (dead handy)

Only thing against it is the battery is kinda short (not a problem cos i'm at work at a computer all day) & the lack of accessories in the box (no plug for example)

So I'd advise you to look at the Archos range (the new 5th generation 605wifi was announced recently). I also like the creative zen, the buttons put me off but it's still a nice player...

Or you could try Cowon, never seen nor used one but i've heard nothing but good things about them...

How much is the zen vision M 60gig, and where can the 30 gig one be found cheapest. Wondering is the 60 worth the extra? I think it is time to get rid of my iriver hp140 as I have no charger and it's kindof damaged. :(:(

Wonder are there any irivers that are quite good atm too?

iaudio X5l 30g as a stand alone music player is IMO the best out there.

im looking for an upgrade of my pmp (my main being a 30gb ipod colour). I was thinking of getting 80gb ipod, is there a player out there to equal or out do it?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 7,424 Mod ✭✭✭✭pleasant Co.

The new Arhos 604 looks good. It is coming out on the 14 July according to the Archos Shop. It comes in 4,30,80,160GB. Has Wifi, Touchscreen and you can download videos from Youtube and Cinema Now through the Wifi on the 604. Thinking about getting one. The current 604 Wfi is supposed to be good.

Its actually called the 605 of, but yeah, whateva :) . The 604 was decent, but let down by its sub par audio quality (comparable to that of the ipod sans line out)

the 605 is coming in 4gb alright, this will be flash memory rather than HDD, and it will also have expandability via a SDHC card slot allowing, at the moment, up to an extra 8gb of memory. the 4gb model will either be slimmer than the HDD counterparts or have increased battery life.
