    Hey folks,

thought it would be useful to have a special thread for people to recommend hostels that they found particularly outstanding, anywhere in the world really.

Maybe it was really cheap, perfectly located, unusual, whatever!

I got the idea cos I was listening to the radio today and they were talking about a hostel in Berlin called 'The Ostel', which is kitted out with furniture, wallpaper, etc, from before the fall of the Berlin wall. Tis full of all sorts of commie sh*t! Here's the site: http://www.ostel.eu/ostel_willkommen_eng.htm

There's some cheapo dorm type rooms for 9E, so I might go for that when I'm in Berlin next month. It looks pretty gnarly, I must say.

When I was in Berlin I stayed in the Golden Heart Hostel - it's based on the theme of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy :p

Was pricey enough, but very comfy.

For not much sleep, but lots of boozing and meeting new people I would say the generator hostel in London. Stayed their a few times, great craic. Just off russell square so its a good location too.

I would also say the Big Apple hostel in New York, its practically on times square and is quite reasonable!

They also have another one in Berlin, brilliant hostel, cheap, next to both the Tram and rail lines so getting everywhere is easy, staff were really sound and the bar inside there is unreal

I seem to have a thing for old kindof run down hostels with a bit of character.

Everyone I've talked to hated the 3 ducks saying it has dirty and old but I loved the place. The staff where great, the bar with it's large selection of cheap drink and trapdoor under the flyer rack for catching unawares backpackers is just legend. I actually saw some poor girl fall down the hole cartoon style. It has a nice courtyard aswell, it's only a 15 minute walk from the Eiffel tower and has two metro stops close by.

It was the same with the golden sickle in Prague, had a big courtyard and the staff where great.

www.hostelworld.com and www.hostelz.com are handy as you can see a list of hostels along with comments from previous visitors good or bad

Another vote for Nathan's Villa in Krakow. The worst I ever stayed in was Turmherberge Don Bosco in Vienna, in this old church tower that swayed when the bells rang. It was more of a hostel in the sense that people come up to you in the sreet and ask you to spare some change for a hostel. Was like something out of a horror movie. That was back in 2002, not sure if it's still open today.

Man you must have been really drunk/high! That place is a ****hole. 20 people to a room, people often just arrive and nick your bed, not enough showers and it smells terrible! Here's my thoughts...

    Recommended:

    Boston - YMCA @ Symphony (2005)
    Dubrovnik - Villa Rascita (2007)
Thessaloniki - Thessaloniki Youth Hostel (2005)

    Avoid:
Boston - Irish Embassy Hostel (2005)
    Amsterdam - The Globe (2006)
    Skopje - Pelagonias (2005)

I wanna recommend the 'Fabric Hostel and Club' in Naples, Italy. Its located in Podici, south of Naples city, in a safe area. The hostel has free internet, huge TV with DVDs shown every night, a ping pong table, a bar and restaurant (with meals for E3) on the premises........ Its located outside of the filth of the city, close enough to Pompeii, and Vesuvius, and about 35 mins from Sorrento. If you stay here, go to the Pizzaria Trattoria around the corner. Great food in a lovely family restaurant, for good prices. We had a ball there with the family, got free bottles of wine, clams, etc.

Going back there some day ;) The hostel is around E20 a night BTW, in a dorm. Nice beds, lockers, etc. Good staff. Enjoy!

USA hostels - San Diego: Brilliant place to stay, the craic was unbelievable. had a great common room where everyone scooped untill the girls were coming around cleaning the next morning.

Big apple hostel - New York: more so for its location, its a quiet place and decent lodging

Villa Camerata in Florence, Italy is by far the best hostel I have ever stayed in.

Ostello Domus Civica in Venice. 20 euro a night per person for a twin room in a really great location. Free use of computer for internet, common room for eating and a tv room with big comfy couches. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Quirky old fashioned lift added even more to the charm of the building.

Lads who recommended that generator hostel in Berlin/London, How far is the Berlin one away from Alexanderplatz? Is it located there and 10 mins away from most tourist places, or is it ten mins. away from that station? Looks a cool place, and if its in Alexanderplatz, I'll prob go there(good happy "hour" times:D)

Budapest: The backpack guesthouse. Fan-friggin-tastic. The most laid back hippy-ish hostel I've ever been to. Serious chill zone. All the walls are hand painted, there's a jungle of plants in there, hammocks etc. yet it's clean! http://www.backpackbudapest.hu/
It's a little away from the centre but that also means you end up paying a lot less on food/booze etc. Also the tram is right beside it.

Couldn't have summed up this london hostel better. Not the ideal for me personaly, but definitely a great deal of fun.

Bruges (Belgium): Another Beatniky, very well priced hostel is Snuffle hostel. Very young, chilled-out staff, all the games (chess monopoly etc) are free to play. According to locals I talked to it houses the best bar in town, with its own "snuffle" brew. I really liked that bar I'll tell you. Possibly the closest hostel to the supermarket while still being very central too.

Anybody stayed in the circus hostel in Berlin? Thinking of booking it. Loads of people write in their reviews that it's the best hostel they've ever stayed in

I was there - although it's nice, has a bar & was fun with the other guests, it's quite a walk from alexanderplatz. It's proper east Berlin.

I'd find somewhere more central if i was goign again.

The one in london is brilliant though.

Back on topic the Oasis in Lisbon is marvellous. We practically got an apartment. Very clean - daily meal for a fiver. internet access & location is perfect. damn good hostel

The bar stayed open til 3am and the staff al preformed, while there the barmaid got up on the counter and played an electric violin....brilliant :D
