Some pre-airshow pictures. These were taken today (friday) during the practice sessions. Maybe others could add their pictures to this thread from the weekend flying.

Dave get to the Car Park in Salthill or better still the Slipway at the Car Park, thats show central. Were you by chance using AV priority for these shots? Looks as if you could do with upping the shutter speed a bit as they all look a tad soft.

Man, oh, man, I can't wait until Sunday! Seeing daveg's pics there and the ones Dave (Steyr) posted up earlier in the week is really getting me all fired up for this show! I think I might have to break out the old 'Top Gun' soundtrack and have it blasting away in the car on the drive over on Sunday! I FEEL THE NEED........ THE NEED FOR SPEED!!!! ;):D

That's the best spot to watch from then, is it Dave? How early would you need to get there in advance to make sure you got a good viewing spot then, do you reckon?

Oh, by the way Dave, regarding the static helicopter display, how close are you actually allowed to get to the choppers? Are you allowed go right up to them and have a look inside and all that or are they cordoned off with barriers or tape and you can't get any closer than that? Just wondering as I'm hoping to get a good look at the Merlin and the Air Corps' new AW139 and get some good, up-close-and-personal pics, that's all! :D

I just borrowed the camera from work (really good camera) - pointed and clicked. Didn't bother trying to learn how to use it first. Will try some of the settings advised for Sunday.

I was directly in front of the Salthill hotel development. The earlier Thunderbirds display had them flying just to the right of the hotel for the flyovers and then back right over my head (defening me!!).

Will bear the car park/slip in mind for Sunday but that area is always packed for the airshow. With a child in tow I might opt for a quiter slot up the prom.

    Thanks for the tips.

Looked like a good spot - Im in Galway now since yesterday so might see if I can get down to Salthill today to scout some good spots... Might take a while as I had a long night in some local establishments....

How far from the shore will they be? What kind of zoom were you using for these today?

You would need to be in Salthil for 10AM, The Helo's arrive around 11AM i will be in the static park around 10AM to keep it closed off. It's up to the crews really as to how close you can get but im sure you will be able to walk around them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Thanks for the info, Dave. Needing to be in Salthill by 10? Christ, looks like I've got a really early start tomorrow morning so! :D

By the way, when you say "i will be in the static park around 10AM to keep it closed off", does that mean that if you're not there by 10am the whole area is closed off and you won't be able to get into the static park after that? Or are you referring to just closing it off to traffic? I thought you would have been able to walk in and around the area freely at any time (except when the choppers are taking off or landing, of course). Or am I just getting totally mixed up here? :D

I am there just to make it clear for landing and T/O and then i hand over to the Civil Defence around 2pm.

I've a 1900x1200 screen and even I had to scroll to see those last few. Could you resize them to something reasonable, you don't need to post them full res.

sorry fixed them back to thumbnail view, click on them to get a bigger image, think they came out well considering the camera i had and the fact the planes were moving so fast!!:D
hopefully better quality photos will follow from others as every second person there had high spec dslr's!
