Camera in Africa?

I'm away to Ethiopia in 9 days for 4 weeks and i'm 90% sure that I will be bringing my 300d (too big an photo opportunity to miss). I was told that I should expect it to be wrecked by the time I return due to dust and the like (never mind the possibility of theft)

Anyway, has anyone here brought their camera to Africa, and if so, did it come back in bits? Any precautions I can take?

Get a grip and bring a huge amount of AA batteries.

Yep Fenster is right ... a grip and a huge amount of betteries is essential ... my battery went flat half way up Mt Sinai at 3m in the morning (hiking up to catch the dawn) ... I was devastated until a Bedoiun guide told me I could buy AA batteries in the little shak at the top of the mountain!! ... at 4am in the morning ... in the middle of a desert mountain range !!!!

... it can be very difficult to find places to charge it in Africa ... especially on Safari ...

Bring lots of memory cards as well ...

... in dusty dry climes just be extra careful about keeping it clean ...

Your camera will be fine, as the lads said, power is the key. Only thing you should be careful of is where you change lenses. If you do it on a windy dusty day, you could get dust on your sensor. Apart from that you will be fine, and your more likely to get your camera stolen here than there :)
