    Whats the best free program to check for possible hacking on a pc??

    Not sure about a free programme, but Kaspersky version 6.0 Internet Security has an anti-hacker function that keeps a body count. (Kaspersky is not free and is expensive)

    Heh. No, a rootkit is something you don't want on your PC. See here for more info.

    its one tool you could use to keep rootkits off your system.. but its quite difficult to get rid of some rootkts using current tools available, thats why most people just recommend a full re-install.

    the best way to keep malware off your computer is to prevent it from running in the first place.1 simple step is using windows under a limited user account, this can help ALOT.

    With Kaspersky, under anti-hacker, you can raise the level of security to high, whereupon installing anything (including Kaspersky updates) would be quite difficult for you (or anyone). This is one of many ways to block the installation of malware by others. But you can still web surf, post to boards, email, whatever...
