Anyone know of a free or cheap NNTP server app? I want to write my own newsreader and would perfer not to be developing off a live server so somthing I could have sitting on my machine would be perfect. For windows preferably but if theres no other option I could always try and get linux running on vmware and try it on that.

    thanks

    Synchronet software includes one

    see http://www.synchro.net

It's primary purpose is as a telnet BBS server, but includes, NNTP, Web, FTP functionality. It's free and there's versions for windows, linux and mac i think

INN (InterNetNews) is the traditional choice for BSD and Linux and was the mainstay of Usenet for many years. It is still used and maintained, though many of the high volume sites have moved on to commercial offerings such as Cyclone/Typhoon. INN should be available in the repositories for just about any Linux distro.

Depending on the functionality you require, Leafnode could be another option and is usually easier to set up and configure compared to INN. Again, you should be able to find this in the repositories for just about any distro.
