BMW E46 - Harmonic Balancer

Mate of mine just had to get his Harmonic Balancer replaced at a cost of nearly 600 quid (300+ for the part, 2 hours labour) in his 2004 320d.

He says they weren't surprised at it going, and that it's a known issue. I've never heard of this problem before, certainly not widespread... anyone else know if it is a very widespread problem on the E46? Not an expense I'd look forward to.

God, ever since i bought my 320D im reading of these 'known' common faults that seem to cost a lot to repair! Haven't heard this one but have you checked the bmwland forum perhaps?

Havent't got the foggiest what a "harmonic balancer" is or does.

But I reckon for a spare part with such a poetic name 600 euros is a steal

Ahhh ...so the "harmonic balancer" turns out to be a rather mundane timing belt pulley

In that case 600 euros is a rip-off !
