Customs at Dublin Aiport

Hey folks, I'm not certain if this is exactly the right forum for this one so apologies in advance if not.

I'm abroad on holidays at the moment and I had hoped to pick up a laptop and digital camera while I was here, but I completely neglected to consider airport customs until the day before I left home. Essentially I'm just wondering what they're like these days, I've never been stopped before but with one exception I was always using the EU channel whereas this time I won't be, and before where I never brought anything of any real value home, this time I want to. So I'm just wondering what experiences other people have had recently with customs, and would I be likely to get the stuff through without declaring it and having to pay the VAT and excise etc., and also if I do try to go through without declaring anything and am stopped and checked, does anyone know of any additional penalties I could expect?

I did a quick search for similar threads but most of the ones I got were a couple of years old.

    Thanks for any replies/advice.
