OK ActorSeeksJob,
First let me say thanks for your help so far.
I have followed your instructions with one exception,
There was no VPSNETWORK.DLL in c:\Windows.
Everything else I have done.
Before I re-post the log I want to tell you what that has done for me.
The annoying error message & browser redirect has stopped.
There was also an annoying little red triangle associated with the pest which flashed in the system tray, that's gone too.
My Desktop though is all white now. the background picture is gone & if I right click the desktop & choose properties? this is what I get

Well ActorSeeksJob,
Probably a very unorthodox method but I have it sorted.
The main User Account on the machine had the white Desktop but when I logged in as Administrator the Desktop was fine? so here's what I done.
I exported the Desktop portion (Folder) in the Administrator Accounts registry to a file & used the file to add the contents to the registry on the effected account.
It worked & everything is fine now.
By the time you read this you will probably be back from Spain? Hope you had a good trip?
Anyway, your assistance was very much appreciated & helped to nail the nasty

hey gadgetman496, thanks for letting me know about how you fixed up your PC, I was a tiny bit worried for a while
Spain was great, although my shoulders are burnt, annoying!!
Just a few house cleaning things you should do as you had some pretty bad/strange/rare infections.
To re-activate Spyware Doctor's OnGuard Tools
1. From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
2. Check "Activate OnGuard".
Now we need to reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading un-select "Show hidden files and folders".
Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Check the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :

Once you have done that, can you re-run HijackThis again so we can make sure your PC is clean. Click "Do a system scan and save a logfile" and post that here.
Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your
computer against malware infections.
* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from

* Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Comodo, or
Outpost
Make sure you only use one firewall though. A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

I have all the housekeeping sorted & the system is running sweet.
You suggested that the infections were of the nasty nature?
Well you should have been looking at it from this end :eek:
I've dealt with quite a few in the past but that had to be the worst, it all but brought the system to a full halt.
Anyway, all is well again.
