With an Irish passport just arrive, no prblems.
EU, US, Australia passport holders and a few others do not need a visa if its a tourist trip and less than 30 days duration.

You will need to get a visa before you arrive into Laos, this can be done in most city/towns in SE Asia

I got mine in Hanoi about 2 days before I travelled into Laos.

Where are you going in Laos? Its an amazing country,

You can get a laos visa in the loas embassy in bangkok or get one in the airport if you cross the friendship bridge (not gonna explain, look it up). Check out travelfish website.

Does anyone know if there is another way of getting one? cause apparently laos embassy is far away from everything in bk

Hey Jrad, you can get a visa on arrival in Laos, so basically you can pick one up at any of the official border crossings. There's no need to have one arranged beforehand.
