I think you need to expand on that a bit. In the absence of any other information the implication is you want a current Irish service rifle. If the Guards you apply to know anything about guns it's unlikely they'll grant you a certificate for that.

Possibly, there is a civillianised version of the AUG about.[ugly yoke IMO] no select fire, semi only,is impossible to convert to select fire ,no fwd grip, flash hider, thumbhole stock[on a bull pup],no carry handle optics, just a pictanny rail.Cost about 3k.
Egun has them the odd time or oberland arms.

Interesting. Are you interested in an old bolt action? The Canadian "Ross" rifle is very nice - accurate, smooth bolt and sophisticated iron sights, and its a bit different from a MK4:D

Oberland Arms in Germany do a civvie version of the AUG. However Oberland are more renowned for their AR15's.

Give Frank Satzinger a call on +0049 8847 697259. He's very pleasent to deal with & has excellent English. He'll probably try & convince you to buy one of his AR 15's instead though :D

    Second that Packass.:D
Just wish I could afford one of his "made in Germany" AR15s:( Or that our DOJ and Supers wont freak at the mention of semi auto rifles. Someday, maybe.

I'm a bit confused by this.. most countries seem to have a "big list of guns you can't have", or at the very least have a list of types of actions or calibres that are restricted. Is this not the case in Ireland? Is it all ad hoc and based on what the local superintendent thinks?

Also are decisions based on what you have owned previously? Like if you've owned a weapon of calibre X in the past, you're allowed to buy something of calibre X+1 now? Or if you've used a weapon to shoot rabbits in the past, you're allowed to buy a weapon capable of shooting bigger things now? Is that the law? It all seems very strange to me.

Yep! It is very strange and subjective. Thats why we are always moaning about it:( Apart froma few guidelines or so called directives knocking around it's all down to your local Super. Some supers prefer you to have, for instance, a .22 rifle or shotgun for a while (to get to know you) before issuing say a fullbore rifle or pistol but others see a gun as a gun. Some wont issue anything other then a .22 rifle or shotgun (watch the court reports).

Restricted firearms list is due to be commenced at some stage if the new justice minister wants to keep it.

However Dr. Teeth I should point out that regardless of what people have and have not there has not been any problems with legally held firearms of any discription.

As I understand it the Superintendent has ultimate discretion when it comes down to what you can or cannot own.
and until if/when the restricted list comes out you can have more or less whatever they will grant you a license for , including an automatic shotgun if so desired, or on the flip side maybe a .22lr single shot may be all that you are allowed if at all!

I would very much like to get into Shooting, but on my own terms.. and that doesn't seem possible here.

    To explain:

    1. I am not interested in a "sport". Fair play to Sparks and those Wilkinstown chaps but the jackets, the flat shoes, the odd looking airguns.. it all leaves me cold. :)

    2. I am not interested in playing "rambo".. some people like it, but having tried airsoft and paintball before, it's not for me. I'm just not comfortable with using a gun (even a non-lethal one) as a toy.

    3. I am not interested in shooting animals. I live in the city and therefore don't need to be concerned about vermin, and to be honest I'm lazy and would prefer to buy venison or pheasant or whatever from a butcher's shop!

I am however a big history buff, particularly military history. Like bunny_shooter I would love to be able to own an old rifle like a Lee Enfield, Kar98, Mosin Nagant, Garand etc.

To be able to own such a piece of history and go target shooting at a range now and then I think would be wonderful, but from what I've read that isn't possible in Ireland. Is that correct?

Actually it is, but the only range i think of is Midlands in Offaly. Find your rifle eg .303 put in your firearm cert application, go down to Midlands, or whatever long range club is near you, join up pay your fees. Wait, wait, wait some more and then eventually you should get your licence. If im wrong in what i said the lads will correct me, and set you straight

There was a thread here a couple of months back regarding owning/importing Lee Enfields. They're a rarity in Ireland, next option is importing from the UK from private sales or the likes, cost....approx €400-€600 depending on model, year, etc etc.

They look nice! Beautiful wood on the Garand. If theres one thing I dont like about Garands (not that I know a lot about them anyway) but the trigger guard bugs me......I know its only a functional piece, but I dont like it, just looks like a piece of metal bend to shape, it looks small and insignificant. Compared to the Lee Enfield where the the trigger guard and the trigger have a nice flow and shape to them (except of course for the pressed steal trigger guard in the first LE pic)

    Fussy aint I :p

What scope mounts do you have on the first LE Harmoniums?

dont know .. its a drill and tap job, probably some generic side mount,
came that way when i bought it

WRT the M1 trigger guard, your right its a crappy stamped metal job.
earlier on in the war they were a milled sturdier affair

heres the rest of my milsurps

the top is a swiss K31, my most accurate service rifle, then a french MAS-36
(which puts a hurting on my shoulder i tells ya!)

    then a bubba-job SKS in a tapco t6 stock

heres a unissues Yugo SKS I got recently ... love the 7.62X39 catridge, can shoot it all day

Sounds like your a bit like me then! I'm living outside of the city.

I'm not really interested in needing to prove myself in competitions
(although never say never they could be fun) its enough to prove
to myself that I am capable of shooting well rather than trying to
win some sort of prize or medal.
(I would like some coaching though and maybe get more serious about
    getting better)

Also I have no need to actually kill anything to get pleasure from shooting.
non-living targets is just fine for me to get my kicks.

Would love an Enfield and an FN. I may try get an FN in .22LR at some stage
but my memories of using one in .22 (or with conversion kit) are bad
as the calibre is not the best for cyclying the action. Plus the trigger is
crap so it would not be great for target shooting so it would be just
for show or my own personal use.

i think you guys might have us wrong when you think that.i'd rather be down the fields "hunting" and see nothing or shoot nothing, than shooting targets for a few hours(much as i enjoy that)
i don't need to get my girlfriend pregnant to enjoy........well you know
