I stayed in this hostel in San Diego. They have a few on the west coast, definitely recommend them.

Sayit have hostels. I stayed in a cheap one that I got through them in San Francisco, but it was a dive.

I booked a few hostels in Poland through Hostel World, they do the US as well. It's pretty good, you can read people's reviews of the hostel on the site.
