Takeshi Kitano's seminal masterpiece Dolls is on. Watch it.

    Do it. I command thee!

Or else, I'll send the robotic Richard Simmons after you!

    You have been warned.

No, I just think the average AH poster needs some culture in their sad little lives.

Argh! You've taken it out of context! It was a direct address to the posters of After Hours! Under films, it no longer works!

Peon: any person of low social status, esp. one who does work regarded as menial or unskilled; drudge.

Wow. That truly was an astonishing film. Everything about it was so beautifully handled:
The cinematography was wonderful. The colours were extremely vibrant: the yellow car, the blossom field, the repeated use of the colour red. It was just a wonderfully filmed piece of work. And that shot of the toy windmills absolutely blew my mind.

The stories were all fascinating as well, and extremely emotionally involving. I had a tear in my eye when
the little plastic ball got crushed by the car
    :(

A truly remarkable film, definitely worthy of comparisons to Kurosawa. And the best looking film Ive seen since the Fountain ;) , easily.

Same here. That always gets me.

As for comparison with Kurosawa, yeah, I can definetly see it in Dolls, but on the whole, Kitano's always had a very distinctive style. Check out Hana-bi for example, and it's equally as lush visually, but in a more unique Kitano style.

I do remember reading about how some people interpret Dolls as part of a trilogy, which begun with A Scene At The Sea, and Kikujiro. Sadly, Scene hasn't been released on DVD in the UK, along with Kids Return, both films being dramas. Seems that Kitano is best known for his Yakuza films, and somebody has decided that there'd be no audience for his less violent films.

Damn it! Trudging through the movie channels finding nothing but The Fast And The Furious 3, I never thought of checking our very own RTE. I've never seen it. Might pick it up on dvd (with Hana Bi, which I still somehow haven't seen).
