Just looking for peoples thoughts on this course, I've never played it but due to play in up-coming society outing.

Not played it myself but I played the Heritage with my mother, expecting her to be impressed, and she reckons Castleknock is the most beautiful course, in the best condition, she has ever played.

Not much help if you're looking for course management or tactical advice but you should look forward to it.

    have to agree with copaceptic

the course is not good. Too bare, very plain and boring

    I disagree entirely.

Castleknock is a great golf course - yes it is wide open in places but greens are fantastic, fairways immaculate and with water in play on several holes it is a really good test of golf.

Played there last year, have to disagree with swingking and copacetic as well. The overall site is a bit small to fit an 18 hole course, so the design has had to be compremised(sic) as a result. So be careful people taking shortcuts on the doglegs as the fairways are quite close in spots. Specifically, the 6th and 7th, and 8th and 17th. It's a bit unusual in having a par 3 as the 18th, which shares it's green with the 9th, also a par 3!!
The clubhouse is very nice though.

i'd probably agree with all that.

however, for the amount they charge i was hoping for a little better. Not a course i would want to play every week, but still good for a game every year or so.

probably the most manacured course in the country, but has some pretty interesting holes. It is still a young course though.

If it is advice you are looking for I would say lay up to the greens. I found any time I played there that there was a hell of alot of run on the fairways and the greens, and I tended to end up off the back most of the time.

it's one of the few courses where I don't mind paying the full green fee.

€90 is super value for a course that is this good.

I played Castleknock today and I have to say it is easily one of the best golf courses I've played (up there with Headfort New Course). The layout is fantastic, very interesting with 5 Par 5's and 5 Par 3's. Not a boring hole on the course. The Par 3's are amazing!! If your level par for all five of them you're doing very well indeed. Couple of really strong Par 5's too. One of them is 591yrds. and another is 597yrds. Also, there are one or two Par 4's that are driveable, mainly the 5th. I think every good course should have a driveable Par 4.

All in all I thought it was a really good courseand a great test of your game, and I cant wait to play it again next Monday

Also (@ Copacetic), I bet the only reason why people don't like this course is because they either played crap while there or else it is too difficult for them!!

    ok, i'll come clean!

it's a fantastic course and have been playing in regularly for last year or so. It's also normally very quiet but has been getting busier and busier the last while with the normal slow playing muppets. So please stay away! (not that this is any of you I'm sure)

The only issue with it is that it is a bit short, for example most of the longer holes like those longish par 5s can be shortened considerably if you take the right line off the tee. Bought are very reachable with a good tee shot which is unusual for such long holes, but the doglegs cut a lot off them. Also the 1st, 5th, 12th and 15th are all very short par 4s which is a bit many for a high quality course. You can either knock it to within 10 yards of the green if you fancy the risk or hit a couple of 8 irons on if not. Its a very tough course if you are having a bad day, but if you are hitting it well it is a little bit easy imo. However I'm seldom hitting it well all day so it is about right for me!

haha... good old reverse psychology... you gotta love it!!

It's the same with that elm green course. don't go near it. worst course ever. it's particularly bad on wednesday evenings and saturdays. keep away during these times!! :D:D

I played it a few weeks ago paid €60 for a twilight rate, found that offer on www.IrishGreenFees.ie and I thought it was a good track? There is water in play on many holes. the par 3's are quiet long especially the 18th across the water. First hole is a lovely setting, 10th hole is good especially the approach to the green. Fairways were in excellent condition and greens were nice. When you consider you are only 10 minutes from the city centre it is good value.

I thought it was woefully overpriced for what is a tight and fairly uninteresting golf course.

Would anyone know if Castleknock is open for membership and what price it is? Is it a share or a old style membership?

It's a bargain. €30,000 entry fee and only €1,500 + VAT annual subscription.

I take it then it must be a share at that price. €30k is quiet a bit of cash, they must be going for high earners or possibly don't want many members!
