    Hi There

Someone is buying me a present of a plasma TV:D :D

I have 2,000 euro to spend and want a 42 inch, preference is Panasonic. I want to wall mount it. There are so many options in Panasonic - I can't figure out which one to get!!!

It will be used in a basic manner - watching TV, HD, videos and DVD - that's about it.

    Any suggestions would be great!

    Thanks

    Pitsy

With your budget, a full-HD 1080p set should be within range: Panasonic Viera TH-42PZ700 (if bought online).

For around €1400-1500, you should be able to get the lower resolution (hardly noticeable at normal viewing distances) TH-42PV70 - I have one of these, very happy with it.

Or for a bit more you could look at a 50" :D .

Also, have you factored in a good home cinema set-up? Sound is as important as visual quality these days.

    Thanks starman100

I was thinking along the same lines but didn't know if I was just falling for the marketing. That said, I am seeing that one for a more expensive price though?? Am I missing something??? Also it says the wall mounting is extra??/

    http://www.technikdirekt.de/main/en/lcd-plasma-tv/plasma-tv/168980/-/Article.html?

Does anyone know what this model is SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE on Panasonic's own website - am i missing something obvious???

    http://shop.panasonic.co.uk/invt/th42pz700wall

On the sound, we just built a new house and installed something pretty good, I believe??? (DH did, I know nothing about it except there are speakers in the ceiling in every room:confused: ).

    Thanks again

go for the TH-42PV70, excellent tv. the price on panasonics website is the FULL RETAIL PRICE for the UK. techlink isnt in the UK and thats why the tvs are cheaper, but there might be some issues with tuning if you plan to use NTL.

at 2k, go for the th-42pv70, full irish retail price in shops is €1699, although you can get it cheaper in some stores if you look around. at that price in Ireland, it comes with a Pedestal, so you need the panasonic wall bracket, it costs €149.

That's what I will do then. I did read thru the forum and see your advice is worth taking!

I have a large fireplace with a woodburning stove (which won't be installed for another six months) - is it OK to hang the TV over this - there is a 6 inch concrete mantle in between??????

A guy in Soundstore told me I shouldn't do this??????

    Thanks

    nah, that should be fine.

on a slight tangent here... are you sure about mounting above a fireplace?? yes they do look great above the fireplace but have you sat back and visualized what this is going to be like??

unless you're back a huge amount of space, it can be quite straining if you're watching the tv for any length of time...

just something to look out for. i know from experience people who had them above the fireplace and then had to have them taken down because their necks were in bits from looking up at it.

I was wondering about this, do you know if NTL analogue channels can be tuned on UK tv models?

no, they cant. the panasonic ones from the UK are PX70's, the Irish ones are PV70's.

    Thanks Moe

That's great to know and also explains when I could not find the PV version on the panasonic website!

I will be sitting 12 ft from the TV - hoping that's OK??? Although some might be sitting say 8-10ft from it??

Kids won't get to see it!!

depends how high... but on average, 12ft should be ok...

even get a piece cardboard the same dimensions of the tv and stick that up and you will find out fairly quickly!

    Moe,
slight tangent here but.... I now need to mount my 42" Panasonic (bought in St Gt Georges street ;) ) and I can get a "standard" bracket very cheap but.... is there a good reason why I should get a high grade one?

Just bought one last night!! After weeks of ordering and waiting they were finally delivered to DID last night.

I got home and set it up (only took 20 min from box to watching tv!). Sat back and low and behold Fast and Furious was on Sky movies. So cranked up the surround sound and sat back in awe. After having a 26 inch it was a truly amazing experience. Delighted with it. Great film to see on 42inch!

Only slight negative was the quality of watching some programmes. Tried to watch Big Brother and there was a lot of flicker in it. Very difficult to watch that.... hopefully it is just the reality tv's.

what tv is it?? some dont work with the "standard" brackets, and thats why you need the Panasonic one.

to be honest if it was me, i'd go for the Panasonic one @ €149. Or a B-Tech or Vogels one if not the Panasonic one.

Hi Moe, am wondering what Panasonic to buy? Harveys said the TH42py80ey is excelent at Euro 1699, (I see it now elsewhere at 1499 Euro,in Peats and Alliance) but Harveys give a glass stand and a small black DVD player for no "extra cost".You mention PV70's, what are these and are they as good as, and beter value, than TH42PY80EY? Any other sets you wuld suggest?
My original choice until I went to Harvey was a Toshiba 42 XV500PG 1080p, at about 1050 Euro,it's an LCD, a very neat looking set and a pretty good spec.
In fact I had not considered a Panasonic or a plasma until the salesman answered my direct question " what TV , 42 inch model, do you recommend, and he was adamant that the Panny above was away better in every respect than my Toshiba mentioned above. He says he has one himself, he was very sincere and convincing. Now I have doubts as he quoted 200 Euro more than Peats or alliance, and the Panasonc may be available cheaper elsewhere?
My wife and I will just watch tv , we have Sky +. We are elderly but would like a nice TV, the Panasonic has 5 years guarantee.
Any info. or opinion you have would be much appreciated,
    Feorais

Feorais, check out www.richersounds.ie (Belfast) they have a great offer on a TH42PX80PED, £700 or roughly €1000 delivered down here.

    I have a similar Panny 42" PV71 and it's a great TV for Sky+ and DVD viewing.

No point really going for 1080p (full HD) unless you will be watching Blu-ray or sitting about 2' away from your TV ;).

Definitely go for a plasma, not an LCD, picture is far better for SD / Sky+.
