Archos release the next version of their pmps:

    www.archosfans.com

Some strange decisions in the new products though:

All units have wifi. (sort of good, no use to me though since I have no intention of paying for music videos online)
405 is SD-Flash storage only. (stupid)
    605 has a new 800x600 screen. (brilliant)
No indentations on the buttons (bad move)
Prices are down (less expensive than Gen4??)
All useful functionality (web browsing, replacement batteries, video transfer) moved to the accessories and plugins. (greedy ****s)
The headphone remote makes a comeback (yes!!)

All in all I'm not liking this. I love the archos machines, but having to pay out extra for USB host, TV out, etc that you got for free on the gmini500 is a case of taking the piss. If the A3 supports ID3 tags, that's where I'm going.

The specs on the 604 are good. I think you can download videos from Youtube onto the 604 using Wifi.

Thing is that the base price is far lower than it would have been with the gmini, so they suck you in like that... I got a 404 recently, it was €30 cheaper than the Creative Zen, but in my opinion the archos is far superior in all facets to the creative PROVIDED you buy all the gizmos... (mainly the DVR station)

    It's marketing, that's all...

What bothers me is not just the cost - it means if you want to do usb transfers or tv out you have to cart bloody docks and chargers around with you as well as the unit and necessary cable. It was annoying with the gmini400 that you had to bring the charger with you if you were hooking it up at a friend's house but at least they didn't charge you extra on top of all that.

Does anyone know when this is going to be released? I'm going on holiday in a month and this sounds like the perfect way to pass the time on the 22 hour flight

www.pixmania.com - they have a special archos section. You can pre-order Gen5 stuff on the archos website www.archos.com.

Anybody know anywhere in Dublin actually selling the Archos 605 wifi? I'd love to pick one up before going on holidays this weekend.

A currys/dixons/PC world might carry them now, I don't know if they're readily available to buy in store yet though.

yeah tried them no joy, and the guy in peats looked at me like I had asked him what the square root of a billion was when I asked about it there. Ah well

Did you look in any of the glass display cases in the Peats on Parnell Street?? I saw one on display during the week.

yeah, was in peats on Tuesday. They had the 604 wifi on display, maybe that was the one you saw? I might give them a call tomorrow just in case though.

Ooooh. Possibly. I was just having a quick look and not paying too much attention. I just like seeing what else is on offer. Wasn't in the market for a PMP type device.

What is the difference between the 604 and the 605?

Better screen, better resolution and cheaper price.
