    Howdy,

I spent part of the weekend in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford and had my first outing with the Nikon and a Hoya R72 (infrared filter).

If you could be ars3d, you can also visit an online gallery of this generated using Adobe Lightroom which I downloaded the other day for trial. I'm impressed so far (more features than Aperture for all you Mac heads out there).

You were in Waterford and didn't let us know? There's a load of photo boards heads down here!

The shots are good, but I reckon crop out the first one, the two overlayed images blend in well with each other except the border.

The last one is much too yellow I think?

Good work for your first time with Infrared!

Those look great! I just bought an infrared filter which I should get my hands on today. My understanding is that when using a filter you will need a long shutter speed to allow enough infrared light through. I was expecting that you would get a lot of movement in clouds and so on, but the cattle in your second shot look sharp. What sort of shutter speed were you using? And any tips?! ;)

Was thinking the cattle must have been very still myself. I think different cameras have different buffers towards different light - Myself and Chocheese were out shooting IR some time ago - I was using 30 second plus for my photos, whereas Chocheese was getting them at 1/4 of a second to two seconds!

Out of interest Latchiko, where did you get your filter?

That 2nd shot of the cows would be my favourite - great effect and well processed too.

The cow shot is deadly! Must get a filter.

I picked it up on eBay, it's only a cheap one to see how I get on with it.
I thought the same thing about different cameras having different reactions to infrared light too. I guess the only way to find out is to get out and about with it. Maybe Nikons are more sensitive to infrared? Does Chocheese use Nikon? From what I've read 30secs seems about average for Canon users but maybe it varies between models as well.
Now, to get my hands on some cattle tranquilisers.... :)

Nope, he was using a 350D!

Interesting... I've got a 400D so hopefully I'll be able to get fast shutter speeds too!

The long exposures can be great craic too though!

True, but it's nice to have the option!

What processing did you do on these, if any?

Here's what the original looks like:

    2007-06-17_DSC_0302%20copy.jpg

So a selective grey scale, a load of curves and a few spot removals.

    The cows were :

    Camera: Nikon D70
    Exposure: 0.333 sec (1/3)
    Aperture: f/16
    Focal Length: 50 mm
    ISO Speed: 200
    Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV

So - pretty fast then. I think it may have been a custom white balance (balanced on blue sky).

    Thanks for the feedback.

I've had a play with my infrared filter and I've gotten nowhere near those speeds! Thanks for the info. Great work.
