Ok, so this has been doing my head in for a while (to say the least) -

I know of at least 3 people who have cheated in every single one of the LC exams up until now. I wouldn't mind - in fairness, they are putting themselves and their results at risk - but when I look around and see everyone else stressing and the few ones taking the easy way out it just pisses me off no end.

The exam centre is lax enough and if a few more tried to cheat, they'd get away with it (not going to go into the details).

The fact is that these few will get their courses ahead of others who did put in the work and deserve it more - assuming it pays off for them and they're not caught out.

I never rat people out over anything - even when I really should have in the past (different situations) - but it's not fair on other candidates.

More than anything it's the whole 'in your face' attitude the few of them have after the exams - making it known well to everyone that they cheated ...
I came out of accounting in bits, nearly sure I failed it, only to hear one of them bragging away how he managed to cheat in it.

What would you do in the situation?

Do any of them have the same plans as you? ie: you both have the same courses on your CAO form? In that case, you have to look after number one.

If not,I don't know if you should say anything but if you do come forward, don't tell your teachers, friends, parents, noone. Just have a confidential meeting with your Principal.
Even then, I doubt they would cancel someones exam based on just your comments. They may need two or three of your classmates to come forward. After all, you could have a grudge against someone, not that I'm doubting you.

Be warned if you go onto college, cheating is even more widespread in college exams so don't be shocked by this in the future.

Everyone else seems to be at it nowadays anyway so if you can't beat them join them.

Concentrate on your own performance, don't cheat. Don't judge yourself too harshly when comparing yourself to others, it's about personal development.

Nice guys finish last. They would have no problem accepting an offer for a course ahead of you even if they only got it through cheating.
I'm probably going to get called every name under the sun for saying this, but mention it!

My cousin was in a class with several Polish students in college and they were allowed dictionaries in with them. They had notes written in their dictionaries and after seeing them use the notes for 2 exams he had enough and mentioned it to an examiner before the exam the following day.
The guilty parties used the notes again but were pulled to one side as they left and are now banned from a state exam for the next 5 years or something.

Who dares wins. If they were reported, then they may have to sit the exams next year, thats another year of their lives wasted on the crappy leaving cert. They can hardly cheat on every exam, so they are not really going to be getting full points. I wouldn't stress too much about them, let them know that their bragging is irritating you, if you like, but concentrate on your own exams for the time being.

    WRONG
All their exams would be voided, and they wouldn't be allowed to sit their exams again for a few years.

If I were you I'd say it definitely. Like you said, the other people in the room are relying ont heir own work to do as well as they possibly can. I've seen it in college and mentioned it without saying names just "I've seen this and this happening so could you keep an extra close eye please". Yes they may get in trouble, but then that's a risk they know they're taking. I'd be extra tempted to do it if someone was flaunting it like you said they were

Maybe they're talking through their backsides.

In relation to what to do, back when I was doing the LC I would have ignored it, but then i was more of a waste of space then than I am now.
Now me being a teacher and all I'd suggest approaching a teacher you trust or have a good relationship with and discuss it with them. Or if you want to remain anonymous why not slip a not on the windshield of the headmasters car or under the door of his office early one morning I'm sure he'll take any reports of this serious and take the necessary action.

Another point is it may seem like this is a small issue but some of these guys may get more points than you (or other more deserving students) because of their antics and if you have the same choices as them on the CAO may cause you (or some one more deserving than them) to miss out on the course/college you wish to attend (if you want to go to college that is)

you shouldn't rat out anyone... it takes far more ballz to cheat in the LC than it does to study...

These cheaters are smart.. they realise the LC is a big pile of piss in which you wont remember anything once you leave... why spend all that time studying when you can just cheat?

you should have done the same... instead you whine and bitch about others who were smarter than you.

you never said how exaclty are they cheating? are they blatently bringing in notes with them, and taking them out at their desks?!

Or are they just taking them to the jacks and taking a quick look? Theres only so much you can take in by taking in a quick look at the notes. For example you say they did it in accounting, but for me, for the most part, this is a subject which you either know how to do a question or you dont. You may be able to figure out a certain part, but not the whole question.

Also, you should only be worrying about your own exams....If you were doing so well in them, you wouldnt be on here complaining!!

Cheating really galls me - but I do believe in karma somewhat.

They will get bitten on the ass at some stage. You cannot expect a free ride through life.

If you feel like making a complaint, then ask to speak to your principal or a teacher you feel you can speak to. Explain the situation to them, you don't have to name names.

Being caught cheating in State or college examinations is serious, so if something comes out of your complaint, you might feel a little guilty.

How many people have the cheaters bragged off to? Any one of those could rat them out.

If you know their modus operandi you can secretly write the headmaster about how they do it. Next time maybe they, or someone else using the same trick, is caught.

but people who didn't cheat might be able to spell balls. or might know that piss doesn't come in a pile.

    i say don't.

    the penalty is massive.
    you'll regret it.
and anyway at this late stage you are better off cramming than devising ridiculous ways of cheating.

i bet those who cheat will do **** anyway.

and don't worry the exams are marked a lot easier than you might think!!!!
    really they are!

    i agree with lemonhead.

how effective can cheating be??? you can't really sit at your desk and copy out of the book?

and all the time you lose arseing around with it. would you not be better just learning it.
how can you possibly cheat in accounting?

is it not all about technique?

Its only cheating if you get caught.

I think the penalties for getting caught are severe, too severe to name an individual and not feel guilty. However, I would not put up with it on an ongoing basis. I would let it be know to a teacher or principal, in confidence that you have seen people cheating, not naming names, but they need to be more vigilant in the exam centre, perhaps even describe the method of cheating being used.

Then the cheaters will hopefully not be able to cheat and the playing field is levelled again - thats all you have done. If they insist on cheating when the vigilance has clearly been stepped up, well then thats tough tittys if they are caught and I would not feel guilty about it at all. Yes the leaving is a terrible set of exams, but everyone is in the same boat. You get out what you put in - when people cannot cheat their way to more than they deserve anyway.

I dont know how well people who resort to cheating in their leaving will get on in professional life anyway, perhaps karma will take care of them eventually.

Sounds like the best course of action to me.
