I'm going to upgrade my Macbook to 2Gb's of RAM. Was just wondering what type of RAM other people have gone for. The best deal seems to be by Transcend allthough I've never heard of them before, anyone any experience with them?

    I like the username . . . :D

Macs tend to be fussy about memory and it's always wise to use a memory configurator like those provided on most memory sites.

    For example :

    komplett

    shop4memory.com

Kingston and Crucial also provide similar services.

Saves heartache in the long run believe me !

Would buying straight from Apple not make sense? But then I'm guessing they overcharge for it.

Exactly. That's why you buy your own memory, and sell off the old DIMMs/keep them in a box. And save youself a TON of money!

@OP: Use the memory configurator to find your memory, and don't worry about the manufacturer -- just the price ;)

OP, you may want to check your current congfiguration, as a lot of the Macbooks had the Ram split. So say you bought it with 1GB with may well be 2 x 512 that you have, I've seen a number of people get stung this way.

On the other hand, paired DIMMs on the Macbook lead to better performance.

Yeah all macbooks and imacs come with no free memory slots, there are only two and Apple use both of them to save money.

I'd recommend Crucial for RAM. They were really cheap the last time I checked.

Yeah it improves access times but the difference is negligible. The minute you start paging out it won't matter at all, so more RAM is always better. My advice is forget about matched RAM and just get most you can buy.

I always buy through Crucial: www.crucial.com/eu
The MacBooks seems to be finickey about memory so defo make sure u get the right type.

I'll only say it once more: shop around! Crucial's prices fluctuate up & down quite a lot, so check all e-tailers before buying. And don't forget to account shipping times & prices into your final decision.

    thanks for the advice all,
The memory I have linked in my original post is the type reccomended by the configurator on shop4memory.com. The only reason I'm a bit wary is because on other boards I have read that cheaper brands dont run at full power on macbooks. i.e. when you look up the system performance details it says the RAM is working at 580 as opposed to 611 like it should be. I dont really know enough about RAM to know if this is a major discrepancy or not.......

I've always bought my RAM from crucail.com and have never had a problem. I would highly recommend them.

Yeah crucial have never let me down either. Shop4memory may be good also but you can get a 1GB chip from crucial for about the same price including delivery. OP, I assume your getting two 1GB chips, right?

yeah, two 1gig chips, got two 512's at the minute. Crucial seem pretty good value alright. Do you guys order from crucial.uk or the european site?

I've always used the eu site. I think you may have to but I'm not too sure.

Prices have really dropped. A 2GB chip is actually almost affordable now. I think I may be upgrading my iMac to 3GB shortly :D

Although when ordering a new machine in future I think I may just pay the extra to have Apple max it out in the first place. I don't like having to remove RAM in order to upgrade.
