Hi there, we are thinking about heading off for a few days with the kids and would ideally like to go somewhere to water ski, so we are looking for a location with suitable facilities ie. lake with slip and Campsite or b&b close by. Any suggestions? Lake Muckno in Monaghan sounds promising. Has anyone any ideas please.

Prob more a Things To Do In... OP but here goes.

Cork has lots of beaches and watersports. There's a centre in Macroon.
Or try a holiday in Wales
    Or Fermanagh for the caves

Lough Corrib. Go to Cong on the Galway/Mayo border. There is a good slip and pier, and the camping site/hostel is about a 5 min walk from the pier

Maybe put in a disclaimer every time you advertise this fact John - "please steam clean your boat before coming to prevent introduction of alien species, such as the zebra mussel".

Oh, and if you're bringing your boat from the Shannon or other infected lakes, please...... DON'T!

Actually - anyone approaching Galway please step into the disinfectant spray first, and stand in this little bath. Have you any meat or vegetables?

Zebra Mussels are already on the Corrib and there'll be no stopping them, it's too late.

Wasn't introduced directly to the Corrib though at least, so can't blame the boaters. First traces found at Ross lake (Out Moycullen side) and suspected it was coarse anglers that brought the mussels to the lake. Anyhow, won't be long before their make their way all over the Corrib

Yes, they are in Ross Lake alright, but not in the Corrib yet, although it is only a matter of time. However, Ross Lake empties into the Corrib very near the lower end of the lake, about 15 miles downstream from Cong. It will probably take a couple of years for the mussel to get to the Corrib in sufficient numbers to infest boats going up the lake. Assume 3 years to get to Cong as larvae, and another 3 years for a large population of adult mussels to establish. Thats 6 years.
If you bring a ZM-infested boat to Cong now, thats that 6 years ZM-free wiped out.
Just because the mussels are in a tributary lake doesn't mean we can say "Ah feck it, let's just launch boats anywhere we like."

Did I say "Ah feck it, let's just launch boats anywhere we like"? No. I am a very regular user of the Corrib and plan on keeping it that way for a long time. The reason I suggested Cong to okgirl is because I know her (And her boat) from another forum and I know there are no traces of zebra mussels on her boat

Johncleary, thankyou for that. I was nearly afraid to get back onto this thread. Actually forgot all about it. But many many suggestions. All I need now is the weather. Have been stranded here. Not going to attempt camping in this weather. Now i am afraid to attemp launching in case of ZM infestation. I am a novice and don't want to go infesting any lakes.
Have managed to get out a bit with boat around the locality. Plenty of fun learning how to launch and wheel spins on green slips but it's all part of the fun. Changing car so will need to get new hitch asap just incase a bit of blue sky come our way. Again thanks the reassurance that I or my boat will not be infesting Corrib with ZM.

    Ok
