hop-up puts spin on BB makes it more acurate over longer distances

Airsoft hop-up devices apply a backspin to the pellet so that the pressure force acts on the pellet opposite to the direction that gravity is pulling it. This causes the pellet to fall less over a given distance than it would without the spin applied to it. The hop up can usually be adjusted, as heavier pellets made of denser plastic, such as pellets weighing .25 grams or more, require more of a backspin in order to counter attack forces of gravity. If hop up is adjusted accurately, it can ensure a completely straight trajectory for the projectile. This increases range and accuracy significantly. Most cheap airsoft guns don't come with this function.

Added. I've put a "Other airsoft related terms" at the bottom of the post containing such info. If you can think of any others, give me a shout.

I would also like to know more about the hop-up system. Im using 25.g pellets in my mauri vsr-10 rifle. Does any1 know the best adjustment for the hopup on this rifle.

5 clicks left, 3 clicks right and finally 3 clicks left again... in that very precise order :D

the best way to tune a hopup is to fire a couple of shots and watch the arc of the bb, with the hop off completely you'll see it curve downwards after a bit, turn up the hopup until it gets to a point where it flies straight for as long as possible without curving up too much

It's just a matter to trial and error I'm afraid. Fire a bb, and keep an eye on it's trajectory. If the bb's is moving upward, then the hopup is too high. If it seems to be dipping earlier that it should, then the hopup may be a bit low. What you want is for the hopup to be set so that it cancels out the pull of gravity on the bb, for as long as possible during the bb's journey.

Hopup causes the BB to have a backspin once projected from the barrel. They are used to provide greater range but not accuracy. Many IPSC shooters remove the hopup unit from their pistols to achieve more consistent groupings as range is not needed for such events.

Well around the half way mark has made the BB,S go twice as far and they are still as accurate.
