A couple from yesterday evening, myself and Al headed out to my sisters. The weather was as dull as ditch water so we had a bit of Master/Slave action (with our 580 EX's).
Anyway these are two of a few that I was happy with. Also happy with the shaprness of the 85mm at ƒ1.2

Master/Slave action at your sisters...you could have worded that better mate! :D
    Great shots Roen, as usual!

Any of the closer up stuff come out?

i really like the horse one, for something that should be easy to capture , i find them difficult -- so very nice.

I like the composition of the first one and the sharpness in both, however, I dislike the out of focus bits in both.

I suppose the way around it is to stand away from the focal point and zoom in.

I think the bokeh in the first one is a bit 'busy' alright. But you can't zoom with a prime I'm afraid and I didn't spend about eight million quid on a ƒ1.2 lens so I could shoot at ƒ16 with it ;)

I guess I'm a bit odd with DoF though, I either like loads of it or none at all, and right now I am in the none at all phase.

    Cheers all.

I think they are both excellent - they are both quality shots. That lens sounds fantastic too.

Ok, now I've stopped giggling at the master/slave action comments...

I really like the mad bokeh in the first one. I'm a fan of it, generally, though. I like the tones in it - really brings out the detail in the wood there.

The second is beautiful, and I don't think that's completely down to having a beautiful subject either. There's something about the proximity o the horse's chin to the bottom of the frame that makes me think you caught it as the horse was lowering his (her?) head and makes me think it's a bit sad. But that's probably humanising it a bit too much... (there's a real word for that but I can't think of it just now, doh)

Personification - But it dosn't apply to anything that's already alive...Horses have feelings too man!

And I bet these two were feeling hungry!

Actually its anthropomorphising, but I'd have to be a pedant to point that out, which I'm not... obviously...

So here's where you meant Al :)

I love them Roen, as I said above. I'm an all or nothing girl on the aperture too (why do they even HAVE middle values! :) ) so the bokeh really works for me. I love the tone too, the feel of them all. What did you do in PS?

Aaaaah... anthropomorphising. That's the one I was thinking of but couldn't remember. I think photography encourages anthropomorphising of animals and even inanimate objects, sometimes.

    Cheers folks,
I've never been a fan of the old anthropomorphising, probably because I am a cat person and am fed up hearing 'disloyal' and 'self centered' being used to describe them. They're bloody animals, take them or leave them as is, don't justify your likes or dislikes by ascribing human traits to creatures.

Anyway, I'm one of those people that tries to take photographs on a purely visual basis, I don't tend to try to make a deliberate statement, I leave that to others.
So if something is occupying one of the extremities of the frame or other chances are it's because I couldn't get it exactly where I wanted it to be instead. As Thebaz pointed out horses are trickier to photograph than you'd think!

    Thank for the comments :)

Nah, sorry. They are both crap!

Ok... well the second one is lovely, and its good for all the reasons aforementioned in this thread. My fav thing about the first one is the reflection in the bath. I love what you have done with the DoF that the reflection is sharper than the tree itself, very nicely done. As always.
