I don't a bit of looking around but can't find out how old a car has to be before its classed as a classic, I know its probably been staring me in the face but I just can't see it

Circa 20 yrs for insurance, though you'll need use of a second car and to be over 25.

First Ireland will insure a classic as the main car only. Definitely if its over 30 (i know, i'm with them), and very possibly even its 20years and up.

    @ Mustang68 - :D good one!

True, although I did this with them for a year and I reckon the premium wasn't far off what I'd pay to drive any 1.6ltr, €3,000 car. But - yes they'll insure you. :)

even still it's very convenient. I had my merc on a unlimited mileage policy for EUR660/year but it was 35 years old. To go on an unlimited mileage policy it had to get an engineers report.

Not many (if any) other places will do that on a 35 yo car.

    ^ like 3ps, i had a similar premium, altho' i think their max mileage p/a is 10000miles (16000 km).

I guess i was somewhat over confident in having a 35y/o car as my main and sole daily driver  .... I've just bought a 00 accord as my daily runabout, and have reduced the mileage of the merc to something less ambitious :D .

Timing worked out well as the merc policy is/was up on the 2nd July.

I've had a year of semi-modern, economical and reliable motoring... and now giving it up to go back to the older cars.

When are they classic? When they're worth more than it takes to fix up.

Surely you mean "When it costs more to fix them than they are worth" :)
