    Hi
Have a Dell inspiron 6400 and want to connect it up to TV

    Tv has the below connections
    •Ext 1 Scart: Audio L/R, CVBS in/out, RGB
    •Ext 2 Scart: Audio L/R, CVBS in/out, S video in
    •Ext 4: YPbPr
    •Ext 5: HDMI
    •Number of scarts: 2

    Laptop has the below connection

    TV-Out (S-video-Out): 7-pin mini-DIN connector (optional S-video to composite video adapter cable)

Wanted to connect it via HDMI but the laptop does not have a HDMI connection
The scarts on the TV I use for AMP And DVD recorder
What connection would I be looking for to connect these 2 up ?

    Thanks

What I use is an S-Video to AV connector, from there you just need an AV cable and away you go (You might need a SCART plug if you TV doesn't have the AV ports at the front of it but you can get the plug in any electrical shop)

    http://www.cyberselect.co.uk/range/1121

This would work for picture and sound ?

Can you get a s video to hdmi cable

where can I get these cables peats, maplins komplett ? Dont want to go the ebay route

    This is what you need:

Get a similar cable like this and plug the 3.5mm jack or whatever (The Headphone-type jack) into the "audio-out" of your laptop. Then plug the Red & Yellow (Technically it should be Red & White but some TV's won't support Stereo like this) into the correct colour-jacks on the SCART plug.

    For Audio:

Next you need a cable similar to this, this is the adapter I was on about that I use, they are a bitch to find unless you get them online:

    For Video:
    http://image.compusa.com/prodimages/27/2648d36b-b143-4fc2-8522-17396b08eea3.gif

Then all you need is your average AV cable, plug the yellow jack on one side into the adapter and the yellow jack on the other into the yellow port on the SCART plug.

Plug the now connected SCART plug into your TV or DVD player, switch display mode on your laptop (Which is usually an Fn function on the keyboard) and away you go.

P.S. As for the S-Video to HDMI cable there's no such thing but you can get a HDMI to DVI cable which is better.

    What about This

Would this to the trick as its all in one

    A lot of cables however:(

That's perfect but christ that expensive! €60 for something that would cost you less than €10 and you'd still need a cable for audio out. If your laptop has S-Video out then more than likely you were given the S-Video to Composite adapter. Just go to an electrical shop and buy a composite cable (3 jacks on each side of the cable), a 3.5mm headphone jack to composite cable, and a SCART plug and that's it, €50 saved!

    How about one of These

Will this do the job including sound and picture ?

However the RCA looks like different than your normal one these look like they should plug into something rather than the other way around?

That cable won't go into any SCART plug or TV. That looks more like a Video-In rather than a Video-Out.

Man, I can't break it down any more. Your S-Video output supports ONLY video, you already have an AUDIO-OUT port on your laptop. You just need 2 cables - 1 double-composite sided and 1 3.5mm jack to composite cable. All can be bought in ANY electrical shop in the country.

Sorry just looking at all the options

    Cheers thanks for your help

Will try and grab cables at the weekend and try it then

Was just looking in Peats and Maplins

As the laptop is a dell inspiron 6400 the S port has a seven pin socket while they only have the standard 4 pin

Also checked the back of the tv and it does not have a s video in

    Here is the tv

    It has •Ext 2 Scart: Audio L/R, CVBS in/out, S video in

But this is a scart connection cannot see the S Video in ?

So is Dell the only place I can get this ?

    If so bloody typical

I rang up Dell my God they are the worst to deal with

I got transferred from one person to another going from India call centre back to Dublin and back again

I told them I was looking for an s video to tv lead for an Inspiron 6400

They told me that it is €50 but if I order today they can give it to me for €44 ???

They said this will cover both Audio and Picture but not so sure ?

I asked them for the Dell order ID and they said 725-10175

Checked on e bay and did not see anything

Has anyone got a Dell S video lead and where did they get it from or is there a spurious one ?

A lot of confusion here. :)

There's no such thing as a Dell s-video lead, they are generic, any s-video lead will do.

This is what I purchased some time back and it did the trick. That's all you need. Here's a picture:
    videoware_1954_4000972

The Yellow part on it's own is the s-video part, the 3.5mm jack beside it is for audio, it goes into your headphones socket on the laptop.

I'll leave you to figure out where the SCART cable goes. ;)

I am just looking at the S video port on the Laptop and this has 7 pins
However the standard one available in Peats etc has only 4 pins ?

So are you saying the 4 pin will do ?

Also where did you get yours

Think I know where the scart goes:rolleyes:

    I've a feeling it will, though I can't say with 100% certainty.
Also where did you get yours

From that website I linked in the post above.

Yeah that looks ok but again still the same dilemma 4 pins v 7 Pins ?

Will the 4 pin work in a 7 pin socket

When I asked this in Maplins they said no ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭dubdvd

you could use one of these for video its a DVI to HDMI and just a normal audio set-up

theres lots of ways to do this from svideo to a DVI to HDMI cable
    hope this helps

I'll check my laptop when I get home this evening to see if it is 4- or 7pin.

The only thing is, I bought several s-video cables here (in Ireland) that didn't work, all they gave was a black and white picture. When I bought that one of the s-video.com website, it worked fine.

    Wikipedia says

    Quote:
"The 7-pin socket accepts the 4-pin plug and the S-video signals are available on the matching pins

    Also found This website

so it seems that the 4 pin plug will go into the 7 pin

May order of the s-video website or try the peats option ?

What are they like to deal with and how long did it take to deliver ?

I ordered over the Christmas one year and I had it within 4-5 days. Can't beat that. Based on my own experiences with having to buy 3 or 4 in various shops that didn't work, I'd say buy online.

Thank you for this. I tried my 4pin plug in my old laptop which has a 7pin socket and it worked perfectly:)

    Hi

Got the lead today it took 7 days which is good enough

Hooked it up to tv but the text is a bit blurred ??

Perfect colour and opened up a film I had saved and picture quality ok

Anyway of clearing the text blur ?

Also stupid question but playing a video on laptop and when I close it it stops and opens again when I open lid. Now I know its something simple to fix this but anyone point me in the right direction ?

Ah yes, welcome to computer-on-tv. The TV's resulution is something like 500 by 400, the smallest the PC can display is generally 600 by 800. So you need to turn down the resolution to the lowest on your laptop.
Also stupid question but playing a video on laptop and when I close it it stops and opens again when I open lid. Now I know its something simple to fix this but anyone point me in the right direction ?

Control Panel->Power Settings. There will be a section "When I close the lid on my laptop computer" set it to do nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭Irish Gunner

    Cheers thanks for that

Will try to figure out the resolution when I get time and muck around with it

Going to use it mainly for watching films and football matches live on the net
so for these it looks ok but will check it out when I changed the resolution
should be easy enough to do:rolleyes:

As for the lid figured that out for myself pretty easy enough for a technical muppet like me

Recommed that s-video site came quickly enough and easy to hook up

    Thanks for all your help

I've a laptop hooked up to my projector, it's runnning at 800x600 and the DVDs look fine. Streamed video from the likes of Yahoo music or YouTube are grand too. Not top quality, but certainly watchable.
