Harrington in the Majors

I know Padraig has had some decent finishes in Majors, but I think he has one fatal flaw in his preperation...

    He talks too damn much!

I know with the disintegration of the form of Clarke and McGinley, he's pretty much the only Irish player worth talking about (media wise) when it comes to Majors, but I would just like to see him give less "I can win one of these things" type interviews to the papers before the British Open and just quietly get on with he job...

Padraig, we know you have the game to win any tournament, ya don't need to tell us every time there's a major...

Just go do it, or it'll pass you by...

The wins of Johnson and now Cabrera in the majors this year just show that Padraig should have every chance if he plays well. Its all a question of composure when he gets in contention. Often it seems european players almost fall away in the final round like Rose and Casey did yesterday.

Its probably the media that puts the pressure on him, more than Padraig himself. Everytime a major comes up he's asked the same questions... "do you think you can win this one?" "yeh of course i do..."

The next day the papers write "Harrington ready to win a major".

he's definitely capable of winning one, and i think he will one day. To do so he's just going to have to put up with the expectation and hype though.

It's the same with all the british players too... media hype can work against them.

doubt it has anything to do with majors. Hes the one player talked about all over the world. A good player who hasnt won a major, like Sergio.

I dont really ever consider him if im thinking bout major winners cause i just dont think he has what it takes tbh. Hes game isnt good enough, even with hes recent win. I dont know maybe hes a choker on the big stage or maybe doesnt feel comfortable in america i dont honestly know.

But maybe he should focus more on his game rather then endorsing stupid golfing gimmicks.

I wouldnt be suprised if I saw Harrington go through the rest of his career without a major win.

I think Podge main problem is in his head.

Most of the time when he comes off the course is about missing this putt and that putt.

Looking at the negative instead of the positive.

I think Padraig over analyses things, he gets to aggressive when he has a chance and feels he has to make birdies instead of getting in and posting a score. in the Masters he was in the water 3 times on the same hole - if I did that I would throw the clubs into the water! He needs to loosen up a bit and be more natural he has great ability but just needs to relax.

Maybe he should learn from Cabrera and smoke on the course but Cabrera is so relaxed I wonder what he is smoking!!!!!!!!

I don't think having your brother in law for a caddy helps either!!!

I think its the talking his clubs do at the majors rather than his mouth that is the cause of him not winning a major.

He could have won one (or more) - and he still might, but the bottom line is that his game just isnt good enough to give him a high chance of winning. Its just very difficult to win one - witness Monty, or the years PhatPhil struggled.

And Harrington is undoutedly inferior to both of them despite their long fallow periods. Harrington also has a poor ratio compared with his pears of converting winning positions into titles.

I dont mean to put him down - he is definitely worth his top 20 world ranking, but unfortunately that only converts to about a 1 in 60 chance of winning. Slim odds, he should still have about 25 serious attempts left and could yet end our wait for an Irish major win. Its a long time back to Fred Daly........

The most damning statistic to come out after Augusta regarding Harrington et all, is the fact that Zach Johnson layed up at EVERY SINGLE par-five all week - and played them five-under par...

I couldn't understand how Harrington could claim he hit "the best shot of his life" into 15 on Sunday, yet it was short - so he hit the shot to his maximum, 100%, and it still wasn't good enough to reach?? Sounds like a tactical blunder to me so...

Bottom line, if Harrington lays up at more par-fives when he should, like Johnson, he wins a green jacket.

I think if, in the next 2/3 years, Harrington wins won - he may win a few.

That has been said about many players that if they win one they will win many.

Its the 1st one thats the hard one but I not sure Podge can win the 1st one until he takes a bit of the mind game out of his head and realexs a bit

I agree fully with that logic and what really adds to your arguement is that Harrington is renouned for being a great scrambler/short game expert. It's fair enough to go for it in 2 (if you have the length) if you haven't a world class wedge game, you take the risk and hope things fall your way - play to your strengths - risk/reward...

Harry is a quality golfer with the right mental attitude most of the time but with 25+ runners up finishes on the tour you have to question whether he is a bottler or has done dam well to get so many second places
