    Shown up again today.

Marty Morrissey and Jim Carney are just poor.

Marty, we were witnessing one of the great hurling matches of the past 10 years and you were in mono.

It was really shown when the australian commentator was working on the compromise rules match with Marty as co-commentator. Black and White.

    Micheál is still the king.

The commentator (didn't get his name) who did the Donegal/Tyrone game today was dire! I had to mute the TV and use the radio but then it wasn't continuous. :(

And was the radio commentary any better?

Agreed, Micheál is miles better than any of them.

Also I dont knwo how he has been left there so long, but Ger Canning's commentary leaves a lot to be desired.

I often wonder would RTE be better off giving the commentary to former players, who would become passionate about the game and would also have a deeper understanding of the tactics/skills of the game etc.

But then you look at Spillane, and maybe it should be left as is for the time being. :D

The only decent ones are Darragh Moloney and the fella from Galway who is always given the "lesser" games (Carney I think his name is?).
Marty Morrissey is always spouting statistics that no-one wants to know just to fill in time, Canning is always doing that too. I also get the feeling that Canning would never go to a GAA game as a fan, he just treats it as a job.
That Michael Duignan really annoys me too, a total fence-sitter, he never ever says anything controversial.

Then you would get players gettin wound up and cursin like mad......actually might be good craic

Instead of "he put a superb point over the bar" you would get "that ****in legend of a boy booted the hole clean outta that size 5 over that jaysusin bar!!!!" :D

Canning was doing my nut yesterday so I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with what seems to be an irrational dislike of the man.

If the sound of his voice wasn't bad enough the fact that every point is fantastic, splendid, marvellous, orgasmic or some other superlative is enough to make me want to cut my ears off. He overuses them to the extent that it dilutes the achievement of a genuinely skillful score.

i hate both of them, that guys voice...ahhhh!! it was funny, he kept pronouncing Ciaran Bonner, as Ciaran Boner!!

canning is really annoying. Its clear to me he loves Kerry and Gooch. He can't even speak properly.Watch the 2005 Championship on dvd and in the Mayo-Kerry semi,Mayo score from a tight angle and what does he say...."thats so diificult to CUM off"...hello Ger,there are children watching

Also Maloney can have his dull moments or jokes.Dublin vs Offaly in 06 and McNamee gets sent off. What does Maloney say ..."Its going from bad to worse to Offaly"....perhaps he intended the pun awfully.

Actually that's how it's pronounced in Donegal ;)

Despite that fact that he consistently gets the players, scores, fouls and background facts wrong

at one stage marty m had jerry o connor and tom kenny mixed as they were wearing each others numbers. Fair enough mistake to make once but he did it for the first 20 mins for 2 of the most recognisable hurlers in ireland who are constantly in the thick of it.
I think it was duignan who had to sheepishly inform him of his mistake... cue 5 seconds of silence

That doesn't bother me, what bothers me is biased commentators such as whoever was beside Morrissey last Sunday. At least Canning knows when a good game or a good score has just taken place.

Daragh Maloney I think would be my overall favourite on RTÉ

Ger Canning is the worst. Michael Duignan knows what he is talking about, someone said earlier that he isn't controversial enough but I think he is a great addition to average commentators.

I agree that he has a good knowledge of the game, but I prefer to see him with Michael Lyster at half time then listen to him during the match

Yep Duignan at half-time, Cyril in the box.

Cyril is a legend. He was co-commentating on an AI Final a couple of years back and before the start of the game Ger made some comment along the lines of "Player X enjoys a good game of golf as well"
Cyril "There'll be no golf out there today Ger"

You can't beat Micheal O'Muircheartaigh... love when he's on the radio so you can turn down the tv and listen to MOM on the radio. Far better commentary and much more entertaining... :)

Never works for me. The radio commentary is never in sync with the TV commentary. Always a few seconds difference.

It's still a better way of doing it because you can also keep up with other games, etc. as well.

When you watch RTE on sky, it's always a couple of secs behind. Watch it on terrestrial and it's grand though.

RTE commentary is driven me crazy this year. If I hear one poor "thats an excellent point, o no its not over I was sure it was"!!!!!!!! Seriously they should mayb know whats a point and whats not and they are actually at the match.

And another thing, why does Marty insist on saying debut in a french accent, where in Clare he picked that up I have no idea!!!!!

Thats the end of my rant :D

thats the only way to watch championship, but with sky now the radio is ahead of the satellite coverage, ta an laithroid puckailte amach and in a players lamh from Michael before the tv shows the puck out, its a balls, and depending on what tool rte have covering the game you are better off wacthing it in the car with the caint leath as gailge

I did notice that robic, its a pain when watching it on TV but hearing everything on the radio beforehand. I just wish my Irish was better! Welcome to boards btw. Your new here right?

I enjoyed Canning's commentary last year in the All-Ireland final. He got very excited when O'Neil scored after that ball came off the upright. Jim Carney when he's commentating try to be the analyst as well. I guess he doesn't like silence.

Micheal O'Muircheartaigh is king... it'll be a sad day for GAA radio listeners when he's gone
