Anyone else sick of the "OMG THEY'VE GONE TOO FAR!" going on with this at the moment?

I know it was inevitable. Still irritating though. Jack Thompson over in the states seems to be latching onto it already.

Can't wait to give it a go myself. If they pull off the controls properly it should be great.

I bought the original manhunt on the back of all the publicity it received and was disappointed by a totally crap and overly hyped game.

I'd wait for a full review a few weeks after release before buying this latest version if i were you.

The game didn't pass the BBFC and has been banned from supply to the UK, so I'm doubtful we'll see it here for a while. I'm sure it will be over turned shortly, but it's likely going to cause problems for Ireland too.

The BBFC have also just guaranteed R* ENORMOUS sales.

According to IFCO it'll be prohibited here too.
A prohibition order has been made by IFCO in relation to the video game Manhunt 2. The Order was made on 18th June 2007 under Sec 7 (1) (b) of the Video Recordings Act 1989 which refers to ‘acts of gross violence or cruelty (including mutilation and torture)’.

IFCO recognizes that in certain films, DVDs and video games, strong graphic violence may be a justifiable element within the overall context of the work. However, in the case of Manhunt 2, IFCO believes that there is no such context, and the level of gross, unrelenting and gratuitous violence is unacceptable.

I can't say I'm surprised. Very annoyed? Yes.

I remember getting the first one on the PS2 when it got banned in england I thought the game was utter crap it became a great coaster.
On the other hand Man Hunt 2 for the PSP has not been banned. This is due to the fact that nobody bought the PSP. Hay that makes it possible then that it might turn up on the PS3

Its still on CDWOW.ie but will it play okay if it is banned? Will it just be not produced in region 2?

As long as some country out there in the PAL region has the nerve to allow it to be released then we can just import from there.

Although, to be honest, I'd say we'll be very lucky if this happens. Germany and Australia are renown for heavy censorship. Who does that leave? France? Spain? Holland? Actually, Holland might be a good option. Lets hope they release a copy with an English translation.

Now tons of people are going to buy this because of the controversy.

Let's remember that Manhunt 1 wasn't a great game and sold on shock appeal too.

I quite liked Manhunt...but then I also liked Robocop Versus The Terminator on the Mega drive.
I must just be a sicko.

Not surprised, nor am I bothered. And while I'm no fan of censorship, I can completely see IFCO's point.

Manhunt is not just a violent game, it's a game for which its raison d'être is to be violent and controversial.

After GTA3 Rockstar quite clearly made the link between negative publicity and positive sales and went nuts - with Manhunt 2 they're trying to shock an audience that's already been shocked 100 times over by other games and you can just imagine the developers wracking their brains to think of the most obscene and gory things possible, so they can throw it in to get Jack Thompson up in arms again.

GTA had a unique game structure, some really enjoyable missions and games and a decent plot - the violence just exists in it because a gangster game without violence wouldn't make sense - nor would a true free-roaming game. Manhunt, on the other hand, is built around violence, and completely over-the-top, shock-factor violence at that too. Just like that terrible game Postal was.

It all reminds me of Marilyn Manson's increasingly desperate attempts to be shocking, to be honest, and I got bored of that years ago.

im interested to see what happens in america considering they banned gta SA when hot coffee was discovered and they have parts of games cut out like the head chops in ninja gaiden

Agree completely Flogen. Its not necessary violence, its gratuitous. The game is designed purely so that you have to be violent, violence is the main aim of the game. GTA violence is within the game but not the sole focus of the game.

Does that really matter though? Surely any adult over the 18 should have the choice whether or not they want to buy this game, whether of not they want to watch this type of violence? It is the parent's fault if it gets into the hands of under 18's but others shouldn't have to suffer for it. I see your point on it being violent just for the sake of it,but regardless any adult over 18 should have the choice to buy it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 815 ✭✭✭Moojuice

True TVnutz but I think deliberately making something were violence is the sole goal is not a good idea. But at the end of the day if they enforced the classification and prosecuted stores sellling to anyone under 18 I dont think banning the game would at all be warranted. As it is it should be available to over 18's, free to make up their own minds. If someone buys this for a minor they are being irresponsible but the state can only go so far in trying to enforce responsibility on people.

All in all the game doesnt look good, violence for the sake of it but I dont think adults who want to play it should be prevented from doing so.

Im still amazed how people are saying the game does not look good. How can someone say this ? I am guessing that you have not played it ? Very few people have and of the two people I know of that have they both liked it( one was an Ngamer review/preview I believe and then a member of the N-europe team got a copy to reviw/preveiw and he too liked it) .

And as far as I'm aware there is only one trailer which does not show any gameplay, but does show a decent plot ( we are talking a about horror game standards here ) .

I enjoyed Manhunt too, and am quite looking forward to Manhunt 2, it seems to have a better storyline not that the original had much of one.

It's probably because a lot of people didn't think the first one was very good even though it sold so well.

Most people would be expecting the worst of the latest FIFA Football if they thought the last one sucked, and Tomb Raider etc.

Unless it has it's "Adult Only" classification changed, it looks like Nintendo won't be allowing it on the Wii regardless.

Well that's just in the US - Adults Only is 18+ in the US, but most games get a 17+ rating.

I dont understand that actually. Sony and Nintendo's response was that neither company allows adults only games on their systems. But they do in Europe. Therefore isn't that a false claim? Or did they specify the American market?

You should play it nowadays. It's awful.

Always thought it was myself, hyped up because of the license and gore but a piss poor game underneath it all.

They specified America as they referred to the "AO" rating. It's an odd climate in the US - Walmart and big outlets don't stock anything that gets that rating, so it becomes very hard to get... it's kind of treated like a hardcore porn movie once it hits that mark.

GTA:SA was re-rated AO (from Mature [17+]) after Hot Coffee - TakeTwo scrambled to remove it because it would limit sales so much.

Now why an 18+ game in the US is treated any differently by Nintendo and Sony than an 18+ game in Europe is beyond me. Maybe it takes more to get the AO rating in the US (when you consider that GTA games here are all 18 while in the US they're M, that makes sense).

By the way, the Wikipedia article on the ESRB suggests that Rockstar will edit Manhunt 2 to drop it into the "M" category, thus making it playable on Wii and PS2 and sellable in major outlets. That edit might save it in Europe too.

From what the BBFC have said, it would seem there would be little or no game left if all the required cuts and edits were made.

How about replacing the human character models with that of zombies? And turning the blood green? worked in the past...

Carmageddon stylee, worked a charm in that...... even though I got my mitts on the full one.

Dont really see the point of man hunt, its just senseless gore, the first one bored me to tears by being a sub-par game with just pointlessly over the top gore and violence, there was no substance to it at all, got bored of it and gave it to a friend after a few days, I wont bother getting the second one unless it turns out to be something worth playing, and even then Ill have to play it first.

According to all reports I've seen, they actually made Manhunt 2 a decent game

    92% kinda good game!

I heard one of the major stigmas in it being banned is taht there is a mission where you have to kidnap a young girl.
    Any truth to this?

Gonna be available to buy online??? Otherwise I'll have to imitate the videogame in real life rather than on my tv.

The game's pretty much shelved at the moment, so no.

Assuming it does get launched and remains banned in Ireland, you'll probably be able to buy it on some website, but Revenue can legally seize and destroy and copies of it if they can find them, so it's a matter of taking your chances.

Wasn't even slightly interested in this when it was first announced, bored one day, so read a preview that *shock horror* said it seemed to be actually quite a good game, that got me interested. When it was banned I was kinna pissed off, as I was lookin forward to it then, so I hope the changes result in it getting released here too!
