Check the original with Glenn Ford, I bet the remake adds bloat.

Looks pretty good. Two of my favorite actors. I'll be seeing that in the picturehouse.

That link wouldn't work for me so I checked it out on youtube. I dunno if it's the same trailer, but it looks pretty cool. I'll probably end up watching it anyway seeing as Christian Bale is in it, though I'm not the biggest fan of Russel Crowe. Fine actor but I keep hearing stories of him being a complete as****e to the rest of the cast and crew on his movies.

the actor can be a complete c*nt...but he's an actor, your not meant to see him on the screen, your meant to see someone else.

One of the few great things about no name actors, you never think your watching them on screen (if they can act).

Must say this looks good, I hate Russell Crowe and love Bale.

I read somewhere aswel that Crowe lost the head at Bale over something small; but the main reason was supposed to be that Bale was loved by the rest of the cast and crew, where as they couldn't stand Crowe.

Looks brilliant - more promosing than the upcoming Seraphim Falls... but hopefully it'll be as good as The Proposition!

Looks very very good. Two quality actors facing off. I like Crowe as an actor. But as a person, he seems like a total douche. Now, I will admit, I don't know the guy personally, but from the reports of him throwing phones at people and the way he loses the head at extras, he certainly comes off as a total jerkoff.

Wow that looks really good, cheers for the link OP. Has some quality actors in it and quite a decent director, so my hopes will be high for this one. Any idea on a release date here and in USA?

To be fair I've heard a lot of good things about him as well. He often plays rugby with the cast and crew to help everyone bond, and listening to him on the Gladiator commentary it sounds like he takes the time to get to know everyone personally. This is a far cry from your usual Hollywood star who isolates themselves in their trailer between takes. The guys obviously just has a bad temper which makes for great tabloid fodder but isn't an accurate reflection of the man himself.

October in the states. I don't think a UK/Ireland release date has been set yet, I suspect sometime early next year.

Also it would seem Bale's character has a wooden leg in the film. Here's a quote from Mangold that was in this month's Total Film:

"The movie ends with a mile and half walk to the train station and we thought it would be brilliant if the man taking the prisoner on this walk was a guy with only one leg. So we've made Christian's character into an amputee. He's come back from the Civil War and his children think he's only half a man. One of the questions the film raises is, what is it to be a man? Is it serving you family and your country like Christian's character...? Or is taking what you want and not giving a damn - like Russell's character - the way to do it?"

Also he says that the final gunfight is all done for real, no computers. He cites Das Boot and The French Connection as inspiration for what they were going for.

    Sounds even better :D

The original is an amazing picture. I'd be very surprised if they do anything to improve upon it.

Some movies should be left alone. That's one of 'em.

Intro shows a distinct lack of subtlety. Already this sets the original apart.

Crowe is a Grade A w****r I have no doubt but most great actors are. De Niro is supposed to be a deeply unpleasant character too.

I've never heard that. He's shy and somewhat taciturn but seems like a nice guy. I don't recall anyone ever saying anything bad about him except expressing a little frustration at how quiet he is.

Barry Norman (BBC film critic) had a barney with him after an interview some years ago. He asked De Niro something he didn't want to be asked and he took it up with him off air after. Norman defended himself and an argument ensued.

Here's a "good but not great" review from HE.
I have to say that it was a very good film but nowhere near great or classic. There's nothing remotely wrong with it -- the story is solid, the performances were really good, but I was just expecting a little bit more. The whole movie seems to be building up to the end so a lot of the scenes in the middle dragged the film down a bit. I just wish the movie was a little more suspenseful and tense.

That said, I was never bored and never wanted the film to end. The best part, for me, was Ben Foster, who plays one of the members of Russell Crowe's gang. He gives such a creepy performance you wish you could shoot him yourself. Both Crowe and Christian Bale give solid performances, but you expect that much from them. There relationship in the film reminded me a bit of Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx's in Collateral.

The movie doesn't reinvent the western and probably won't win any awards, but it's entertaining enough and
fans of the genre should like it a lot. If you haven't seen the trailer yet, don't watch it -- it literally gives away 95% of the movie. I think lionsgate was forced to do this because they wanted to sell it as an action packed western, when most of the action doesn't occur until the last fifteen minutes.
