Nikon 50mm Lens?

    Am thinking I'd like to add a 50mm Nikon lens to my (rather small) collection for my D80. However, I'm wondering whether I should go with the f1.8 one or shell out the extra ~€200 to go for the 1.4? Or not bother at all, go with a shorter lens or something? I'm thinking of it mainly for smaller gigs where there wouldn't be so much stage lighting, but also as a general low-light lens... Any suggestions would be nice :) Thanks!

    Which 50mm lens should I buy? 6 votes

    check out my thread i just posted on here, the voodoo gig, that was one low light gig , red light too and i was using the 500mm 1.8 on a d50, tis perfect, for gig shots the 1.4 might be a bit too shallow for any sort of energetic preformers and the af would struggle and take longer, thats what i thinks anyway but sure i've only use the 1.4 once so i dunno

    I have the Canon f1.8 for my 350D and I use the Nikon 1.8 in work. I don't think spending €200 extra for half a stop if really worth it. There's usually plenty of gig shooters about that will be able to tell you how they do in low light.

    EDIT: there you go!

    @melekilasomething

    Hmmm... Good point about the AF being a bit slow, could pretty much rule out using the lens at 1.4.

    Yeah, had just spotted them after I posted the poll :) Good shots, I see they were shot at ISO 1600... Did you need to do much noise reduction on them? Or would you if you were going to print them, say 8x10?

    since the lights were really red i intended on putting the guts of them in b and w so grain looks grand for them so i pumped it up, when processing i used noise ninja to smooth it out, but yes there is a bit of noise, i could have shot lower but tbh i forgot it was that high :o

    Ah, I see :) there was room in them for a lower ISO I suppose... I've done that a couple of times when using the flash - totally forgot about it I was so busy setting the flash up and ended up with lots of noise :(

    I also have the Nikon 50mm/f1.8 on a D50 and its great. Its on my camera practically all the time unless I know I'm going to be shooting something that needs a bit of reach, in which case I use my much bigger, heavier and slower (but also pleasantly cheap!) Sigma 70-300 :)
