Epson Perfection 4490 has been recommended, but clock up to over 250 euros !

I really depends on what you're looking for scan wise. If you're looking to scan for the web and get small prints done using 35mm negative film then the 4490 above or the equivalent canon scan (8600f ?) will do the job. If you're scanning slide or you need to get large prints made from the scans then you'll be talking a lot more than 250 euros I'm afraid. 250 euros is entry level from a negative scanning perspective. Komplett has the canonscan above for 185 (although I'd get it from anywhere -other- than komplett, their customer service stinks to high heavens). I bought one a while back to scan MF and its adequate at best. For 35mm you really need a nikon coolscan of some description (which are about the only decent entry level 35mm scanners still on sale) or scour Ebay for a second hand model, or the minolta dimage was also acclaimed in its day. Alternatively you might want to consider just getting scans done when you get the film dev'd. Cheaper depending on how much film you get through, and the quality of the scans will most likely be better than a scan you'd get from a cheap flatbed.

unfortunately dedicated film scanners tend to hold their value secondhand (unfortunate if you're a buyer, anyway).
i'd give my left testicle for a dedicated nikon MF scanner.

Yeah, it is annoying ! My coolscan V cost me 600 euros 2nd hand, Very well treated by the previous owner though. I was tossing up trying to get the MF version (9000 ?) but they would ACTUALLY literally cost you a testicle, assuming that you value each one at about 3500 euros :-)

I have a zoom slide duplicator that worked great on my film SLR, duplicating slide or negative at between 1:1 and 2.5:1 enlargement. It does something like 1.5 times to 4 times enlargement on the Nikon digital sensor, but image quality is great. I was thinking of getting another slide copier instead of a scanner because it is so much quicker.

I wasn't impressed with the Epson Photo Pefection 1650 I have (it always messes up ("corrects") colour balance, has poor resolution and some distortion and permanent blemishes in the glass bed).

hmmm thanks guys, i would just use it for 35mm, while i would be interested in blowing the pics up, the normal size would suffice for an online portfolio etc.
I would however would also like to scan medium format, but really something that gets the job done properly. Rather than a perfect high end scanner which really is/will cost me a limb for a photo id put on flickr :(
