Rise of the Silver Surfer

    Apart from
Galactus being mis-represented as a cloud (blasphemy of the highest-order or what)
I thought it wasn't half-bad. Mind you I had very low expectations.

    Surfer:
Almost convincing took a while to get used too but could have done with more dialogue.

    Dr. Doom
is a LOT more like the Doom of the comics. At least visually, its a small(ish) part very one-dimensional. Like the Green Gobliln in the Spider-man films, a lot more could have been done with this character.

Galactus: I don't really want to talk about it right now :(

    As for the FF,
a team effort. Some funny moments, one with Mr. Fantastic, a bit too much like Peter Parker's dancing. (Stan Lee, if you're reading this: no more dancing in your movies please). I liked the power-swopping part: very Super-Skrull.
    .

    CGI:
not too OTT. Mostly of the various international craters. Nice intro as well. Final battle was the usual mayhem.
    .

    Stan Lee moment:
    You can't miss it! :)

    Ending: MAJOR SPOILER HERE>>>
Nonsense. Galactus would never have give the Surfer that much power.

Would work as a TV show - broad-enough audience and a sure thing with the kids.

Marvel will make money on these movies but with Iron Man, Thor and Capt America in the pipe-line its only a matter of time before they have another classic like X-men 2 (hope, hope).

i really enjoyed it! it didnt try to be too emotionally hard hitting or dark or realistic, or anything! it was great fun, havent enjoyed a comic book adaptation as much since spidey 1 and xmen 2.
im probably alone in this though :)
    any word of a sequel?

According to AICN it was "CGI bat nipples bad"...
    Might avoid

just one thing to bacchus - the way they handled galactus at the end of the movie is pretty much verbatim from the comics. kind of important to remember this is fiction, you know? the power cosmic was a source of power for both galactus and the silver surfer. galactus granted the surfer access to it, he didn't just give him a fraction of his own powers.

also, did anybody notice whenever sue and johnny had a brother sister moment it looked a lot more like johnny was having a, well...jessica alba fan club moment?

    Yeah ...pervey :D

Also if they are going to all the troube of doing up Jessica in 101% artificial looking blue eyes and blonde hair, why doesn't Johhny have blonde hair too?

And as regards how in happened in the comix, AFAICR the Watcher sent Johnny on an interstellar psychedelic trip (well it was the 60s:) ) to find the one weapon that could injure Galactus and of course Galactus looked like a Power Ranger mega bad guy. IMHO Andre Braugher would have been better cast as the Watcher ;)

Dan_y: Em no. I thought (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) that the Surfer helped the FF to find a weapon to stop Galactus. Mr. Fantastic threatened Galactus with it and saved Earth. Why couldn't the writers have done that instead of having the being Galactus created destroy Galactus. And the Surfer only has a fraction of the power Galactus has.
Also, Galactus isn't a cloud. It's a giant purple guy. That would have looked a bit silly though :-)

Just a note, some posts on this thread have been moved from Film Reviews, incase anyone thinks they're a little incoherent. Seems some people don't know what Film Reviews is supposed to be used for, despite the title of the board being pretty god damn clear on the subject.

galactus didn't create the silver surfer! norrin radd lived on a planet, zenn-la that galactus was going to consume and he cut a deal with galactus to save the planet. he became a Herald of Galactus. galactus imbued him with the power cosmic - which is basically the marvel universe equivalent of the force - and silver surfer Did sacrafice himself to save earth - and then was exiled to earth while regaining his powers while also learning about earth culture and re-discovering the noble spirit that made him make the deal he did to save his planet. the early galactus was a big purple man, but then in later versions he became a sort of living planet thing. he wasn't a cloud, you're right. I think the cloud made more sense though. neither the surfer or galactus were actually destroyed in the original - but it was the surfer who drove galactus off

So what are you looking forward to in FF 3? The Negative Zone? Invasion of the Skrulls?

This is getting a bit too much like nerdy handbags for my liking but Galactus creating the Silver Surfer and him "imbuing" Norrin Radd with the power cosmic is the same thing in my book. And yes the Silver Surfer did sacrifice himself but he only held off Galactus long enough for the FF to find the weapon to stop Galactus (with the help of a Watcher, but that would have been too much to put in one movie). So it was both the Surfer AND the FF who drove off Galactus. The writers should have stuck to that for the ending and not just have the Silver Surfer (a less powerful being) defeat Galactus.

you know when i left the first thing i though was "what can they do next?" the ending sets up nicely for the silver surfer film thats been in limbo for years so i dont rekon he'll be back. in fact i was kinda surprised by that because i thought they were setting this up as a trilogy with the third one involving galactus trying to munch earth. i didnt think they'd tie it up in this one. personlly i think if theyre gonna do anything next it should be the negative zone and annihilus. que lots of nasty aliens and angst from reed for letting it all happen

i didnt mind the cloud thing because there were allusions of his helmet and overall figure at times and i could rationalise it away as planetarly debris following him about due to gravity (speaking of which i did like the effect when he passed saturn, very nice bit of logical reasoning ) and i did like the nod of the head to the ultimate galactus version when he started to decend to feed. ok i wouldve prefered the classical galactus but you'd need some serious perspective to make it not look camp. physically galactus should be very menacing so they pulled that off at least.

all in all i liked the film. at half the length of pirates its way more accessable and its a fun light hearted bit of popcorn entertainment like they used to make, albeit with a dodgy torture scene lurking about, the humour worked with the jokes being genuinely funny (rockslide anyone :) )and the action was spectacular and in the end thats what you want from a summer film. in fact i can see myself going to see it again as theres sod all out the last few months thats interested me. i honeslty couldnt give a **** about all this horror crap thats being pumped out so a good bit of superhero fare sounds good to me.

plus that stan lee scene, class :D:D

I enjoyed it though.. Yes i did think the scenes between Alba and her brother were pervy...
Galactus though i did not see as being just a cloud. Im not too familiar with the comics and cartoons but i understand that he was an entity which sometimes took human form on a giant scale and travelled in a giant world devouring machine (the cloud in the movie). Well would something that large moving through space not produce some sort of trail? And especially when it comes in contact with our atmosphere etc. When the surfer flew up into it i saw a lot more structure there as if it was a massive machine.

The surfer himself was eh.. Fantastic :D
I think the London tourism board must have paid a load of money for that over the top London eye scene :D
    Good movie...

*edit Just noticed constitutionus was thinking the same as me about the cloud :D
