Switzerland opens the longest rail tunnel in the CH on Friday

    In addition to carrying passenger rail traffic at 280 km/h, this 34 km Loetschberg tunnel is expected to take 4,000 heavy trucks off the roads across the Alps every day. It is expected to carry 42 passenger and 80 freight trains per day.

    A second 57 km tunnel (Gotthard rail) is also under construction which will cut the Zuerich to Milan train journey to 2h30 (currently around 4h30).

    I think thats slightly inaccurate.

    Some of the test trains travelled at that speed, to establish that the rails could ramp up to that speed.

    Passenger rail in Switzerland currently tops out at either 200 or 220 km/h.

    Its still cool. I'm looking forward to using it, hopefully this winter.

    While Swiss trains are slow by TGV standards due to the nature of the terrain and the vintage of the track routes, it is still faster that the TGV in the "Channel Tunnel" between GB and FR, where they can only operate at 160 km/h!

    ps though not as slow as Irish trains, which seldom exceed 140 km/h and generally travel a lot slower :-(
