what do people recommend as the current top antivirus.

I had mcafee security 2006 and currently using AVG and now looking to update.

Thinking of either Mcafee / Norton / Kaspersky

    Thanking you.

Thinking of either Mcafee / Norton / Kaspersky
McAfee is way down the list by reviewers, and I know of one major university over here that dumped McAfee because of all the complaints by students and faculty.

Norton Internet Security Suite is a real resource hog, and is the slowest to update definitions of all those reviewed recently by PC World. Lots of zero days for you with Norton. They rated it number two (overall) behind Kaspersky version 6.0, but if you listen to the boardsies here, Norton will get two thumbs down, including mine (some will use a different finger...).

Some time ago I used McAfee cause someone gave it to me free, but had nothing but problems with it. Dumped it for Norton, and it sucked up my system every now and then to where my other apps would delay loading or slow down. Tried Trend Micro and was disappointed, cause it never caught anything, and I felt exposed.

I recently converted to Kaspersky Version 6.0 Internet Security Suite and find it super user friendly, easy to install (both XP-2 and Vista), grand interface, competitive heuristics, fastest of all reviewed for security updates (by PC World), and I don't notice any loss in capacity when it's running in the background. Only bad news about Kaspersky is it's price!

McAfee is possibly the worst for internet security. Norton is also pretty bad. You would be crazy to get either of them.

If you want the best, then get Kaspersky. Since you were contemplating paying money for McAfee and Norton, an extra 10/20$ to get Kaspersky wont be too bad. It is worth it.

McAfee is universally reviled by anybody with any knowledge about PC Security, Norton is also given the two thumbs down.

I don't use windows anymore personally, but I would highly recommend Anti-vir for anti-virus. Check google for results in tests, its in the top 3 (and its free)

I would give McAffee a thumbs down, simply because of their auto renew. If you delete the package (difficult in itself) McAffee will still charge you for yearly renewals unless you contact them directly. There is no opt out on their website.

Im using Nod32 without any hassle.

AVG works for most people on boards (there is a poll somewhere). The fact that you ask about moving from avg to mcafee or norton means that you don't really know what's going on. Why do you need to update?

There sure is such a thread. I'm another AVG advocate.

NOD32 apparently is the best around.

I use AVG though because it's free and I'm cheap.

Cheers dango ~ do any of us really know whats going on...

Thanks for replies guys. Since I posted it I have been using the 30 day free trial for kaspersky 6.0.

I find it good (better than Mcafee or AVG) but I feel it is a little bit of a resource hog at times. I have seen its file AVP.exe use up a bit of memory similar to mcafee or norton.

I might try the trial for NOD32 and see how that works.

It i dont go with that then I think I will go ahead and buy kaspersky as in fairness it updates every day and picked up a good bit of stuff on my machine that mcaffee and AVG had not been seeing.

kaspersky uses more resources than the other programs, but it will ensure you will never get infected. if you want something that uses less resources try get AVG.

Nod32 here. I use it at home, I bought it for my Dad, and we use it in work. Excellent product, multiple updates per day, and small memory footprint.
