    Hi,

I'm stuck and cant remember how to achieve a particular effect i want in Photoshop.
I have some text i'm putting on a wall and i want it to look faded and some of the wall to show through the text layer.

    Any ideas?

Changing the Opacity or Fill bar possibly?

    Nope, i'm not that much of a n00b :)
Sorry maybe i didn't make myself clear enough in the above post.
It's a filter i've used before and if you put a textured layer behind a solid color graphic you can make some of the solid color delete away depending on the color of the texture behind... so your left with a worn out look.

Sorry :p , just have to ask these stupid questions. I'm not too sure I fully understand you (I'm half awake at work) but by what you're saying if you play around with the drop-down box beside Opacity (Screen, Overlay) you should be able to get a similar effect.

    try the multiply feature

Nah neither of those i'm afraid.
It's an actual filter or effect and you can adjust how much of the layer behind you wish to expose etc...

Is it a displacement map? Now it won't delete or fade the text only distort it so that it appears to be sitting on the textured surface such as a brick wall.

As regards making text look weathered there's the wind filter under Stylize and any other combination of filters to obtain the desired effect. Also using the multiply blend mode as mentioned with opacity works wonders.

Also here's a nice tutorial on weathered/worn look:

This method is particularly handy as the effect is controlled thru a layer mask and is non destructive.
