Lucky sod, getting the chance to go there.
Shooting conditions can't have been great.
You've given a good insight on what it's like, down there.

it's a pity that white balance presets don't include "4m underwater".

Getting decent underwater pics with a p+s or underwater "cheapie" is very difficult*. There just isn't the control over exposure or flash that you need. What you need is a Nikonos or the like, with off-camera flash and plenty of it.

These pics are quite like what I've captured myself (better actually) while on shallow dives or snorkelling and, with respect to your good work with them Morlar, I'm sure you'd agree that it's not as good as what you actually saw.
However, makes me want to get back in there for a swim :-)

    Cheers,

    B.

EDIT: * - sorry, not explicitly directed toward your own kit, mind you :-)

Very very jammy Gerard being out there and getting these shots as well as all the other stuff you did in Oz, how long were you out there for or are you still there??

Cheers for checking - funny that the white balance was mentioned as a couple of them were made from 2 raw exposures with different white balances blended together.

Also they were done with a 20d not a disposable -shot from inside a minisubmarine at agincourt reef (from the quicksilver pontoon about 30 miles out). Believe it or not they actually look clearer and more saturated from what I could see through the porthole - it would be a different story in the water itself but 3inch thick glass with reflections etc is not as clear as it sounds.

Probably the worst part of it was that just as I was changing cf cards a big shark swam by !

Mike - they were taken around early march - unfortunately I got back here the day after st patricks day - but looking forward to getting back at some point next year. Thanks again for checking.

Its very hard to get decent underwater shots without flash as the deeper you go the less colours there are visible. Ive done a fair bit if diving around Indonisia and Burma and did an underwater photography lesson. The camera casing you need to deal with the pressures are VERY expensive and normally have to be connected to your air-tank so you can adapt the pressure depending on your depth.

These shots are pretty good considering how they were taken.
