Power outages in Dublin

The ESB union mafia at it again?

Finfacts reports a second power outage in a week affecting their office, in Green Party TD John Gormley’s constituency.

High time the national grid (down to each house level) was taken out of ESB hands, and opened up to all producers and consumers of power – no matter how small.

In Germany, the ESB look-alikes are forced by law to buy green energy from small producers at premium prices – up to €1 per kW for some solar power! Perhaps this is what Ireland needs to encourage everyone to generate green electricity where they have the opportunity. Put the antiquated ESB monopoly out of business. Big power stations are like mainframe computers. The future lies with a large network of small producers.

Power outage in South Dublin has affected Finfacts' service

Just hours after Green Party TD John Gormley received his seal of office as Minister for the Environment, the second power outage in a week hit part of his constituency, Maybe an omen of more bad tidings to come!

The power was out in the Merrion area for about five hours but is now back.

The power has now been restored.

Our morning updates had been delayed because of the power cut.

    Drastic measures there

Remind me again why was there a Power cut? I seemed to have missed that detail in the report.

Two power outages in a week is a bit much don't you think?

Or maybe that is the norm where you live/work too?

Any more than one outage every five to ten years, in an urban area particularly, is a bit third world-ish.

It all depends on why the outage occurred.

The ESB can not be responsible for some contrction contractor digging up a cable for example.

or storm damage, or a truck pulling down a power line.

Maybe it was scheduled maintenance on the same section and that the Finfacts neglected to mention the fact. Or do Finfacts think there is a conspiracy against them?

You seem to be very biased against the ESB without actually knowing the facts.

Normally where I come from we a have a trial First based on the facts and then the hanging and not the other way round

    Two storms in a week?

Two trucks pulling down power lines in the same area in a week? Finfacts did not suggest a conspiracy against them.

I'm not biased against the ESB at all. They used to be one of the better utility operators in Ireland.

Alas no longer. They are now about 60% more expensive than their cousins in France (EdF)!

No net metering. Threats of strikes when the government talks about opening up the industry. Carbon intensive electricity generation platforms.

If all shops in Ireland were controlled by Dunnes Supply Board, a government monopoly....!

    Who is your sugar daddy?

In the last month I know of at least 4 power cuts due to lightning. Two of the strikes in the same area.

But who said it had to be two trucks or two storms ot trwo of anything. Couldn't it have been one of each.

All I mentioned was possibilities. I could mention more.
It could have been to upgrade the network for increased load. To make more consumer connections.

You still haven't given me the reason and have tried to use an isolated incident to justify a broad ranging attack on the ESB.

I have no problem with you criticising the ESB. But make it constructive. Don't hide behind isolated incidents to make a case. Power cuts happen all the time.

Also to to nit pick a little. there is nothing in the article that says it was the same section that had the power cut. Just that there was two power cuts in John Gormleys constituency in a week and from my reading in to the article it only delayed Finfacts in bringing there morning updates once.

Sounds to me like a planned Outage

Planned outages are PLANNED, and if it is done properly the customer is notified in advance.

It would be a simple matter for ESB to put up a webpage where customers could register an e-mail address, supplying their account number, to receive timely e-mail notification in advance of any planned outage. Allowing them to power down computers and other critical equipment and take other appropriate measures.

I'm not an ESB customer. The last electricity outage I had was about six years ago, and my electricity supplier gave me about 5 days notice. It took place on a Wednesday morning from memory, between 09h30:00 and 09h30:30 (ie for 30 seconds).

All the state monopoly suppliers in my area make appointments before arriving to do installation or repair work on cable TV, telephone, electricity supply etc. Proper appointments too – i.e. For 08h30 or 10h00 – not an Oirish style appointment which tends to be wait in all morning or afternoon for someone to turn up.

You still haven't declared your vested interest in the matter – are you connected in any way with the ESB or a related government agency?

MY "Vested" interest in this matter is as a moderator of this board, I don't like to see attacks on any people, companies organisations etc without proper cause.

You have used a power outage to attack the ESB in the original post without giving the reason why there was a power outage. If it was the ESBs fault for the outage, ie it was planned outage without proper notification then it would be fine to make a comment about that.

All I have continually asked you to do is give the reason for the power cut. Other wise you have no basis to attack the ESB on that point.

Then I will take you up on you're other points
