Toshiba Laptop with VGA connection to Philips TV

I have a Toshipa Satellite Laptop (abput 5 years old now) whioch only has a VGA output. I am trying to connect it to a Philips 37' LCD TV. The TV has got a HDMI connection. I purchased a HDMI to DVI cable, and then a DVI to VGA adapter. When I select the HDMI input on the TV - its says theer is no signal - Can anyone help??
