Starview Cable Box (like the one below)-it allows me to get extra channels. It works with NTL but someone said that it doesn't work with Sky, Sky +.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get it to work with Sky or Sky +

It's illegal in Ireland unless NTL agrees to it (Not likely). You are liable for up £5000 and/or 6 months in jail

There are 4 different incompatible Digital transmission Systems
    Cable (DVB-c)
    Terrestrial (DTT, Freeview or DVB-t)
    (MMDS uses both of these)

    Satellite (DVB-s)
    and Version2 of Satellite. (DVB-s2)

A cable box amazingly only works on Cable.

    There are also various Encodings:
    MPEG2 and MPEG4
a half dozen or so resolutions for standard TV
    two resolutions for HDTV
and differeing colour qualities (4.2.0, 4.2.2 etc)
