Degree Eligibility to Hibernia Course.

    Hi all,

I decided last year to move out of IT & into Primary Teaching.
Since then I've been brushing up on my Irish & though I'm far from the level at the mo, I hope to resit the Honor Irish LC exam next year.

    All good so far.

I've a 1.1 Hons degree in IT. Delighted! Glad I done the degree, cos once I have my Irish I'm eligible.

Or so I thought, until I started reading posts on another forum!!

Apparently there's a framework where all qualifications are rated on a scale.

    See Here

Hibernia only accepts people with qualifications at level 8 or greater & people on the other forum were saying degrees handed out from IT's were only classed as a level 7.

    My problem is this:-
I don't know where my qualification falls!

I did 4 years at college. All years were to run in succession, but 3 qualifications were awarded. (as with most IT's)

I received a cert after 2 years, then I did the add on diploma for 1 yr, & then I did the add on degree for 1 year.

    I got a 1.1 in that degree.

But, does that leave me eligible or not?

Are there any of ye out there with the same qualifications that are now doing the Hibernia course, or do you know anyone who is, or what do you think about the above?

    All comments welcome.
    Thanks,
    BB

Boozybabe.. have you got a BSc. Hons. (Is that what it says on your degree?)

I have a BSc. in Applied Computing (Hons) from an Institute of Technology and its a level 8 qualification.

Prior to the adjustment of the old diploma being renamed to an ordinary degree, there was never any confusion.

What you have is an honours degree.. and Im pretty sure thats a level 8.. as mine certainly is.

You're grand.. if only to calm your nerves, I'd ring Hibernia.

You can do an Ordinary Degree now at 3rd level which is the equivalent of the old Diploma. Its this level 7 degree that the problems have been associated with.

I think this is where the confusion is.

In your case the following applies.. (but do double check for your own satisfaction)
Old Diploma = New Ordinary Degree = Level 7 now
Old Degree = Hons Degree = Level 8 now.

Maybe the other mod here Tom Dunne might be able to back me up. He's the head of lecturing around these parts :D

As far as i know the Hons part (Honours Degree) makes it equivilant to Level 8.
Without the Hons it is Level 7.
you can check this with your college that you attended.

I am doing the interniew for the hibernia HDip course on tuesday - anyone any hints about what ot expect in the interview / level of irish / Length of irish part etc?

i am desperate to get into this course!

Search for Hibernia Interview in the search facility above. I typed lots of info about this before.

Correct ... see page 4 which illustrates the NQF in relation to the older awards.
